Obituary of Bill Henderson
On Monday, May 5, 2025, William (Bill) Henderson, passed away at Valleyview Care Centre in Brandon at the age of 85 years. Bill was born and raised at Oak Lake. He was well known to everyone in the Oak Lake/Virden areas and beyond as the former operator of Oak Lake Island Resort. It had been his lifelong endeavor to operate the family business and it kept him very busy in the summer periods. The winters also kept him busy working to protect the fish population from winter kills. Bill could be seen out on the lake working with friends and neighbors trying to scrape the ice clear and pump oxygen into the water. Bill will be remembered for his many achievements such as multiple campground expansions, cabin area expansions, mini-golf facility, marina, and his beach cleansing and aeration system that was unique and innovative for its time. After the sale of the resort in 2005, Bill continued to live at the lake until 2018 when he moved to Victoria Landing in Brandon.
Bill was predeceased by his father Alexander, mother Mabel, sisters Margaret Orr, Jessie Stewart, Dorothy Bussey, Alice Olive and brother John Henderson. Bill is survived by his sister Phyllis (Murray) Kennedy of Calgary as well as many nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held for Bill at the Oak Lake United Church, 47 2nd Ave. W, on Thursday, May 15, 2025 at 1:00 PM. Donations in memory of Bill may be made to a charity of choice.
