Obituary of Impi Roinila

Impi Orvokki Roinila passed away peacefully on Thursday, June 18, 2026 in Deloraine, MB.  Impi was born on December 6, 1940 in Nastola, Finland during WWII.  She spent 3-4 years as a child war evacuee with her sister in Sweden, returning to Finland without knowing the language or her family. She assimilated to post war life in Finland, living in a small home with her parents and eight siblings. At the age of 19 she was married in Pori, Finland to Olavi Roinila. Impi and Olavi immigrated to Australia in 1967, returning to Finland in 1970 and immigrating to Canada in 1974. They eventually returned to Finland in 1990, where she lived with Olavi until his passing in 2010. Impi then moved back to Canada, and with the passing of her youngest son Ricky in 2010, she settled in Brandon, Manitoba in 2014 where she lived at the Westman Lions Manor. With a sudden diagnosis of cancer, she persevered with Finnish “sisu” until the end. Impi provided daycare for many years both in Finland and Canada, worked at a Finnish bakery while living in Thunder Bay, ON and was a Salvation Army soldier while raising her three boys. Impi loved flowers, sang in choirs and cherished her grand and great-grandchildren.  She was a loving and caring mom, grandma and friend. Impi will be lovingly remembered by her brother Hannu Vesalainen of Pori, Finland; her two sons Mika (Grace) Roinila of Battle Creek, Michigan and Tomi (Sherry) Roinila of Williston, ND; grandchildren: Matti (Laura), Jari (Taylor), Ari (Amanda), Marita (Marcelle Kirk), Sinikka (Alan Rohrer), Laura (Jake Haack), two step-granddaughters Kayla (Tanner Mutscher) and Marissa (Alex Stalvik) as well as 21 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, five brothers, two sisters, husband Olavi (2010) and youngest son Ricky Roinila (2010).  A memorial service will be held in Buxton, North Dakota at a later date.
