Obituary of Janis Bohonos

Janis Margaret (Mus) Bohonos

When we lose someone we love we must not learn to live without them, but to live with the love they left behind.

On January 31, 2024, at 87 years young, Mom was called to Heaven. Morris, her beloved husband, was patiently waiting. She was born in a farming community near Dauphin, youngest child of Joseph and Rose Mus, and sister to two brothers and five sisters. Janis finished school in Dauphin, where she met her life partner. On Christmas Eve, Dad asked for Mom’s hand in marriage. Their wedding was the following summer on August 2nd.  Mom followed Dad and his career path took them to Brandon where they built a blessed life. Mom had many occupations; she taught typing at a high school in Brandon, was a Welcome Wagon ambassador, worked at a bridal shop, and later co-founded and operated Trend Collections - a career that welcomed many, many stories. Community was very important to our parents. They were proud members of the Kinsmen/ Kinette Club, volunteered for numerous charities and always remained involved at the kids’ schools.

Mom and Dad were blessed by their first child, Mark in September of 1968, and Carleen in May of 1970. The Bohonos family was complete! They were the all Canadian family. In 1975 a Pleasant Valley-side lake lot was bought. With Dad’s capable skills in building the cabin and Mom’s family touch, the cabin immediately became the family summer home. Many fond memories and great friends were made at Pleasant Valley.

Mom was blessed with four grandsons. Jeremy and Cole, Mark and Dolores’ sons. Colton and Parker, Carleen and Dave Easter’s boys. Each had a special blanket made by Mom’s talents. In 2020, Mom was promoted to Great Grandma, although fondly called Baba, or Babcia, by the arrival of Liam Michael (named after Morris) Easter.

Mom was predeceased by her parents, Joseph and Rose Mus; her twin sons, Peter Joseph and David James; and her forever husband, Morris Michael Bohonos, as well as many family and friends. All of who will be there to welcome her in her next journey.

Left to mourn are her childrens’ families: Mark Morris Bohonos alongside his wife Dolores and sons Jeremy Ramsey (Jen Ramsey) and Cole Bohonos (Taylor Booth); Carleen Bohonos-Easter alongside her husband Dave, their children Colton James (Kathaleen Hayward), Parker Michael, and great grandson Liam Michael Easter.

Mom was an amazing cook. 36 Buttercup Bay was a hot spot when word circulated that fresh cinnamon buns, a big pot of soup, and traditional favourite’s of borscht, perogies, and cabbage rolls were ready to be socialized over.

Village Green is where Mom lived out her last years, she had many friends and neighbours. She enjoyed her community dinners, cards and Bingo, evening visits with neighbours outside when the weather permitted. She spent hours on her balcony watching the birds and the going ons of the neighbourhood. These things, along with her family, was all she needed to look forward to.

Mom was determined. She fought many battles, and won them all, until January 31, in the comfort of her own home, where she fought to return to after a horrible accident in the fall. Mom was watching her favourite Game Show when her heart failed her. A heart that was filled with loving memories of a life well lived. Her heart was overfilled with pride of the success of her children, grandchildren and great grandson. Mom’s passing has left an unimaginable hole in many people’s heart. Mom counted her blessings. Most of all her family and dear friends. She cherished her Saturday evenings out with lifelong friends Yvette Cancade, Delia Milne and Elaine Rust, and her Wednesday coffee dates with Dianne Fox, Janette Stritz, Heather Thorkelson, and Marge Stewart.
