I am deeply saddened to hear that the world lost a valuable person like VIC. Vic was such a honest," what you see is what you get" kind of person that I (and everyone that he knows) will truly miss. I was first introduced to Vic at the Hardisty Tank Farm Expansion project with me walking into his office and he looking at me a saying "Look at the head on Charlie". I knew from that moment on that he will be one of the greats. He was such a great mentor to me and unfortunately I never told him how much he influenced my life, on the job and off. He gave me one of my least favorite nicknames, but the best one in history – Construction Barbie. To this day it has stuck….thanks Vic. We shared a lot of great times and had so many laughs my stomach still hurts from laughing. I had to compose this note in Word just to make sure my spelling was correct as I felt like he was my English teacher on the jobs. I would hand him documents and he would return them circling all the grammar and spelling mistakes, looked like Julius Caesar's back it was so covered in red ink. I am sorry I could not make it to your funeral, I wish I would have made one more call, one more visit, one more anything to tell you in person how great you are. I will miss you Vic – the Gas Plant builders of the world will miss you but I guess God needs a huge gas plant to be built in heaven, and if there is one mad that could do it – Your it! My deepest condolences to Joyce and Vic's entire family.

I will always regret leaving Vix project and not being there to share the last weeks of his life. It was always a joy bringing my kids to his office and watching the "Construction Ogre" play with them. He seemed to always have toys on hand. What kind of a man travels to jobsites with a rubber chicken just in case? When I first met Vic I feared the man and could never wait for him to leave, after 12 years and various projects I turned to Vic for advice in both my career and personal life and felt as though Vic and Joyce were our extended family. He brought culture, humor, joy and stress into my life and it was an honor working alongside him.
I must remember to build an Inukshuk. We love you Vic and our hearts reach out to Joyce and family. Our door is always open and phone is always on.

I don't really understand the purpose of RIP sentiments. Are they supposed to somehow honor the person? If so, Vic Holms ought to have an infinate amount of them. He was one of the top 5 most amazing people I have ever had the pleasure of befriending.
He was the closest thing to a grandpa that I ever had. He cared about me when not many people did. The sincere, genuine kind of give a damn that is rare. He gave me some of the best advice I've ever gotten in my life. He made me smile and laugh every day I seen him. He give me hell when no one else would, he pushed me back in the right direction when I was wandering the wrong way. He always knew what to say, and when to say it. He was simply an incredible human being and a gift to everyone around him.
The world is missing a big chunk of wisdon, compassion, and happiness with out you here. Heaven really must have needed a hero.
Rest in Peace

It has been a long time since Vic and I talked and now I regret we'll never get a chance to reminisce about the jungles of Peru or rickshaw racing down the streets of Bangladesh.
To all of the loved ones who Vic left behind, I just want to add my voice to the other folks on this page who have said that Vic was one of the best. He was.

Vic would say only time and money were needed and it could be built. And could he ever build. Nothing was too complex for Vic. He made us all look good. I was very grateful to have Vic on our team. Vic, you left too soon and we will miss you alot. To the family, so sorry for your loss.

It was my honor and pleasure to say I was able to work under Vic for 5 years until 2009. He was a mentor, a comedian, a confidant and a friend. And watch out if I have any grammar errors he will haunt me, ask Barbie if you don't believe me!!
One of the best stories I have about Vic and I tell it every time I am asked to play the Ground Disturbance Blues song he directed me to write. It is hard to tell this story without rambling but I will try. At the Calgary spring meetings I commented to the facilitator that Vic had been using the same theory in practice that the guest speaker was preaching, she promptly requested Vic to speak at the Lloydminster conference for the ground disturbance summit. Vic wasn't really a volunteer speaker, he was a good speaker but he only imposed his opinion when it directly involved his project usually. It took him a couple of weeks to reply and in the end he came to work one morning and told me that he had an epiphany. He said he was out on the deck having his morning coffee and the girl across the way let her dog out to do it's morning business and it came to him. He let out his world famous war whoop and scared the crap out of the dog. He had decided he would speak but I had to write a song called the Ground disturbance blues and after his talk I would sing it. The end result was we showed up at the summit my guitar and harmonica in hand and waited for our spot which Vic in his usual wisdom wanted to go last. After 8 hours of information sharing, other speakers and brainstorming any form of entertainment to lighten the mood would have been good. Vic went through his points on ground disturbance and experiences and then gave me my formal introduction to the 100 or so engineers and project managers as well as lead operation personal for Husky for which I am still remembered. He told the audiance that we had worked together and conducted a lot of ground disturbance activities in difficult situations, he then went on to tell them all that I was a member of the "selective Saskatchewan inbreeding program" with Vic you had to be prepared for the humour and I introduce myself in that fashion whenever I sing this song, it kind of became my mantra.
The things Vic taught me went beyond learning, he was a gentleman, wordsmith and truly a man of character, I could never thank him enough. I wonder if theres chinese checkers in heaven??? inside joke

I have the greatest memories of working with Vic. He always brought a chuckle to the conversation despite the challenges we were facing. Sharp as a tack, he'd keep me on my toes and, yet, always support the decisions we made. He was a pleasure to work with and his valued contributions will be greatly missed! My condolences to all, particularly to Joyce.

I have so many fond memories of Vic from the days at the Broken Back Ranch in Carolyn, Ab. Vic was always generous, fun and loving in those days when children were little and days were busy with chores on the farm. We spent many hours of talking around the dinner table with lots of laughs. We lost touch but lately were reunited thru a long phone call. Wish it could have been more. Miss you Vic and you and Diana can be reunited even we couldn't. Love you

Vic was my favourite inspector to work with. I could always rely on him to do a great job and he often kept engineers out of trouble. And we always had lot of laughs along the way too.
My sympathies to all of Vic's loved ones.
