I have known Lawrie for as long as I can remember. I was almost 2 years old when he was born, when our families both moved to the 1000 block on 13th Street in the South End of Brandon. There was one house between the Mitchells and the Hogelands, but we were like one family back then. Our families went on weekend camping trips together, we went to each other's birthday parties, played 'kick the can' in the back lane with the other neighbourhood kids, attended the same schools, and also the same Sunday School. Lawrie was in the Church choir at a young age, and was a good vocalist and entertainer. I still vividly remember Lawrie singing "Hello Muddah, Hello Faddah" at a Legion Christmas Concert, when he was about 10! Lawrie remained a good friend throughout the years. Sadly, lifelong friends from our old neighbourhood are passing away at too young an age. I am glad to have had a visit with Lawrie this past summer in Calgary. I will cherish my many memories of him. To Beth, Lawrence, Kristina, Steven and families: wishing you peace to bring comfort, courage to face the days ahead, and loving memories to forever hold in your hearts.
