Obituary of Evelyn Mary Haggerty

HAGGERTY: Evelyn Mary. With hearts filled with happy memories, we sadly announce the loss of our Mom, Evelyn on Monday, June 16, 2014 at her home in Hillcrest Personal Care. Her presence will be sadly missed by her children Mary (Late Bert) Hunt, Les (Sheila) Haggerty, Marg Lamb (Meryl Rayner), George (Arlene) Haggerty as well as six grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. Mom was predeceased by her parents Jim and Agnes Jones, her loving husband Harold in 1968, her brothers Bill and Bert and her sister Margaret. Mom was born in Hereford, England on February 13, 1919 and came to Canada at the age of five with her parents, one brother and her sister, settling on a farm near Newton Siding, MB where the family farmed for many years. Mom moved to the Moore Park area of Manitoba to work. She met Harold and they married November 2, 1938. Together they raised four children, settling in Brandon. She devoted many years of her life caring for her home and family as well as the several boarders who "joined the family" over many years. Following Harold's passing, she worked at the Brandon General Hospital for several years in the nurse's residence, often providing a sympathetic ear or a caring shoulder to a student when needed. Mom worked at the Hillcrest Personal Care home for several years before retiring. Mom volunteered at Hillcrest for several years. She loved to read and knit and spent many hours creating afghans and hundreds of pairs of slippers for family and friends as well as finger puppets for children in hospital and toques and mittens for disadvantaged children in the schools. And so we say good-bye to a lovely lady who lived her life with grace and dignity. She will be remembered and admired for her independence, passion for life and her hearty laugh. Mom especially enjoyed the fun and laughter of our family gatherings, be it for a special occasion or just because. The family would like to express their gratitude to Hillcrest for the care of our mother in her final years. According to Mom's wishes, there will be no funeral. Cremation has taken place and a private informal gathering of family and friends to share memories will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Brandon's "Food for Thought" Program, 1031 - 6th Street, Brandon, Manitoba, R7A 4K5 or the Brandon Regional Health Centre Foundation, 150 McTavish Avenue East, Brandon, Manitoba, R7A 2B3.
