Obituary of Douglas (Doug) Leslie Bartlett

BARTLETT: Douglas, of Creston, B.C., formerly of Elton Municipality, passed away peacefully on August 6th, 2014 at Creston Community Hospital at 90 years of age after a lengthy battle with cancer. Doug was born to William and Dolly Bartlett (née Shelvey) at the family homestead north east of Forrest, Manitoba (Humesville District ) in December 1923. It was in this district that he received his schooling and worked on the family farm. In 1950, Doug and neighbourhood friend, Lloyd Franklin, went west to find work with C.P. Rail. His first home was in Sandon, B.C., but this was lost when a dam failed washing away the town site. He then moved to Creston, B.C., purchased another home and settled in. Doug worked with the section crews and soon became a section foreman, maintaining and repairing track winter and summer. He was an honest, hardworking individual who could be counted on to get the job done regardless of its difficulty. He also found time to pursue sports with baseball in the summer and curling in the winter, becoming a popular member of the community of which he resided in for the rest of his life. Not forgetting his roots, Doug would return to Manitoba annually to reconnect with family and friends. He was very popular with his nephews and his visits were looked upon with much anticipation. Doug was predeceased by his parents William and Dolly, stepmother Clara, brothers Cyril, Everett (Scotty), sister Alice Slator and twin newborn sisters. At the time of his passing, Doug was survived and sadly missed by his sister Phyllis Clark, nephews Harold Slator, Larry, Wesley, Dwane Clark and families, and a host of cousins, second cousins and many friends locally and in the Creston area. Graveside service and interment took place at the family plot in Humesville Cemetery on Friday, August 15, 2014 with Arlene Robertson officiating. Thank you to those in attendance. Donations in memory of Doug may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, 415-1st Street, Brandon, MB, R7A 2W8.
