I am so thankful for Dick and the whole McDonald family, including "Mr. and Mrs. Mac" - who became my dad's loving "surrogate" family - and Dick my dad's best friend. Thank you Dick - my dad loved (and still loves) you very, very much - and will miss you greatly until the day you meet again.
I remember spending a few weeks one summer (circa 1973-74?) at Dick and Verda's - for Mr. and Mrs. Mac's Anniversary party. I was hesitant at first - that we were staying with this family with 3 BOYS?!?! But it turned out to be one of the best summers, with the most fun memories - of laughing and running around and being silly..... Just a great family time!
The video you made is so wonderful - thank you for putting together all those fabulous memories. It really was a "wonderful life" - I hope I am as lucky. Our love and thoughts and prayers are all with you, dear Verda and your wonderful family. And Dick will be in our hearts and mind forever.
With love - Dawn Ewonus & Rob Thompson

Dear Verda and Family,
My wife Anne and I extend to you our heartfelt condolences. Like all of Dick's Gunner comrades in Brandon and across the country, I was deeply saddened to learn of his passing. I began my military service in 26th Field Regiment under Dick's command. He encouraged me to join the Regular Army and in the years that followed, whenever I returned to Brandon, I would always seek him out on the armoury floor or in the Mess or at the Military Ball knowing that I would again be the beneficiary of his insights to the latest regimental or Brandon news, his advice and continued encouragement in military matters and, his wonderful sense of humour. I, of course, was only one of countless soldiers, students, athletes, clients, university and community leaders, association members, friends and colleagues whose lives were enriched due to their association with Dick. He was an exemplary citizen in so many ways. We are all in his debt and will remember him fondly and with gratitude.

McDonald family,
I am the mother of 2 BU student athletes who have been recipients of your generous scholarship support to be able to play and learn over the last few yrs. We are so very grateful for this contribution as my husband has not been able to work due to health issues and having the girls assisted with their education is wonderful. I, too, am a graduate of BU and attend both b.ball and vb games regularly. I will miss not seeing Dick in the stands, but will not forget his great presence and dedication to the university athletes. Our deepest sympathy to you all! Please know what a huge impact he had on young lives. With sincerest graditude, Debbie, Kellie, and Jodie Baker

So sad to lose Uncle Dick. Although it didn't happen often enough as we moved all over with my dad (Uncle Bud) being in the Air Force, it was always great to hear the brothers tell stories and laughter was always present. I shall always remember Dick's twinkling eyes. May he rest in peace. Aunt Verda, cousins Rick, Paul and Daren, fond memories will help ease the pain in time. Take care of each other. Sincere condolences from Uncle Bud, Aunt Grace, me and my children, Shannon and Shea.
Hugs,
Maureen McDonald

Dear Verda and family
I was saddened today to hear of Dick's passing. My thoughts and prayers are with you during this sad time. It seems only a short while ago that I saw you both at our Brandon University Homecoming. I well remember your kindness to me when I was a freshman at Brandon College, Verda. The generous contributions and support you and DIck gave unstintingly throughout the years to our alma mater are also remembered and appreciated.

Dick was a great man! I have many pleasant memories of his teaching our class in Grade Nine at Harrison High School. As Russ Reid puts it "Dick was one of the good guys." We really appreciated his calm disposition and caring attitude. Our class had a nickname for him which I believe he didn't really understand but reference to "Barney" was a term of endearment and respect on our part. Thanks for being a great role model.
To his family, I extend my deepest sympathy.
