I am so sorry to hear of Mr. Sumner's passing. I was a student at Linden Lanes from 1964-70. On the last day of school in 1965 there was a parade in town and only four students showed up for school. Mr. Sumner promptly loaded us in his car and took us to the parade. After the parade he took us to Dairy Queen for ice cream. That is the standard that all subsequent teachers and principals that served me and my family were judged against!

It is with sadness that I express my sincere condolences to Don's family on the passing of a fine gentleman and friend. Over the years it is through my involvement with the Virden Oilers as past members of the MSBL that I truly got to know Don. The first thing that I want to say is that Don was always a kind and gentle person, and a true gentleman in every sense of the word. As a fellow member of the Westman baseball fraternity, Don will always be remembered for his tireless and unselfish time and effort that he put in as our long time MSBL secretary and league statistician. Don's visionary, dedicated and professional approach that he used in the gathering of individual, team and league statistics for each and every league and playoff game over a large number of years, and the sharing of these statistics with the local media and sport historians did much to promote the image of the MSBL as first class semi-professional baseball league.
Having been raised and educated in Virden, Don never forgot his childhood and baseball roots. Being a staunch Virdenite, Don was always interested in knowing about the sport and general happenings of his home town community. As a friend and fellow baseball enthusiast, I will truly miss Don's genuine smile and the friendly banter that we shared whenever our paths did cross; most specificly when we met at Cloverleaf baseball games. I will miss Don as a friend, gentleman and as member of our regional sport fraternity; however it is with gratitude and appreciation that I will remember him for his many contributions as a principled leader and true sportsman within the Westman sporting community.

My deepest sympathy to you and your family. My memories of Don go back many years to him & my Dad being involved in the MSBL. I am sure that they are somewhere discussing baseball right now and keeping stats. It was always a pleasure to see Don & yourself at the rink and when I went to curl Wednesday morning, my thoughts turned to Don and how much I will miss seeing him and our little chats. He was a wonderful person & friend.

To the Sumner Family;
Don holds a very special place in my heart. He was the principal of Linden Lanes School through my elementary years as well as my Grade 6 teacher. He was my teacher when my father Les Edwards passed away and I remember him being so very supportive to my mom and I. He also nominated my dad to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2002 and did an amazing amount of work to make my father an inductee which I will remember the rest of my life. He was an exceptional man and my love and condolences go to all the family in your loss. Sincerely Sharon Edwards Trigg.
