Obituary of Clifford Carbno

CARBNO: William "Clifford" Carbno was born to Stanley and Juineta Carbno on July 30th, 1930 near Tessier, Saskatchewan. He died on December 14th, 2014 at age 84, after 22 years of illness with leukemia. He was the oldest of eight children and was predeceased by his brother Oliver, whom he missed greatly. He is survived by his wife Charlotte, son Collin (Shirley), granddaughter Christine and grandson Steven. Also surviving are his siblings: May, Arthur (Susan), Wallace (Pat), Alfreda, Jeanette, Garry (Linda), sister-in-law Florence, brother-in-law, Bob and several nieces and nephews. Clifford was predeceased by his sisters-in-law Mildred and Darlene, brothers-in-law Michael, Maurice, Harold, Noel and Anthony. His family moved to Nut Mountain when Clifford was three years old. Clifford had a great love for nature and sports - particularly hockey. He played as a goalie for Humboldt alongside Glenn Hall, future NHL goalie. From the earliest years, Clifford also had a love of learning. He taught himself how to read at age two on his mother's knee. By high school, he was excelling in all subjects and his high school teacher, Herbert Tucker, had visions of him going on to academic greatness. Tucker was concerned when Clifford married Charlotte Gairns in 1953, feeling it would end Clifford's academic opportunities. Tucker's concerns were unfounded. Clifford attended Moose Jaw Normal school, first taught at Lintlaw Rural and Archerwill. Then, he joined the RCMP, and distinguished himself as a boxer. It was during his training in the RCMP that he met Charlotte. Unfortunately, a gym accident, a broken back, ended his RCMP career. Fortunately he recovered enough to walk again, and returned to teaching. He taught in Fort Qu'Appelle, Wolseley, Moose Jaw, and then for 25 years as professor of Educational Psychology and Measurement at Brandon University (BU). During his teaching career, he took several breaks and pursued first his Bachelor of Arts, followed by a Bachelor's and Master's in Education at U of S, and then eventually Ph.D. from the University of Toronto. His doctoral thesis explored how short term human memory capacity changes with maturity, and changes with jumps at specific points as children age. From Toronto, Dr. Carbno moved to be professor at BU. During his time at BU, he was awarded the Order of the Sheaf for recognition of outstanding contribution for the betterment of BU. He retired from BU in 1992 because of the leukemia illness. In his retirement, he started a computer company, Say-C Software. Clifford was an active member in the Lions Club for 49 years. He distinguished himself as a Lion, earning both the Hope Medal and the Melvin Jones Fellowship. Clifford was an active church member of Faith Fellowship Church, leading bible studies and being a church moderator for a number of years. He survived through three rounds of chemo, which wiped out his hearing and balance, but he continued to serve despite limitations. His wife Charlotte, his son Collin, siblings, relatives, and many members of the community will long miss his deep sense of compassion, generosity, wit and fairness. The Funeral Service was held at Faith Fellowship Baptist Church on Friday, December 19, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. Gordon Brown officiating. Interment will take place at Riverside Memorial Park in Regina, SK on Monday, December 22, 2014 with Rev. Joel Russell-McLean officiating. Donations in memory of Clifford may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, 415-1st Street, Brandon, MB, R7A 2W8, the Brandon Lions Club, #2 Mockingbird Drive, Brandon, MB, R7C 1B2 or to a charity of choice.
