Obituary of Stewart Gordon Bone-Wasteste

WASTESTE: Stewart Gordon Bone-Wasteste "Wahansica Ska" of Sioux Valley Dakota Nation, passed away peacefully at the Brandon Regional Health Centre on Friday, March 6, 2015 at the age of 91 years. He is survived by his daughters Sandra (Aaron) McKay, Olga Wasteste, Margaret Roscelli, son Ronald "Luke" Bone, primary caregiver Chad Roscelli, as well as numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren. Stewart was predeceased by his wife of 63 years, Rosalie Bone Wasteste "Tioti Wasté Win", son Robert Bone "Tatanka Hoksida", daughter Wicahpi Waste Win, nephew Bill McKay "Mato Zi", mother Ellen Wasteste "Tate iyape win", father Wilson Bone, grandmother Mahpiya Oisida Topewin, grandfather Tacanhpi Wasteste, great grandfather Bojaja and great grandmother daughter of Inkpa duta. Até/Unkan was a hard worker and worked as a farmer and rancher most of his life. Since he was 13 years old he supported his grandparents who were on in their years. He eventually realized his dream of owning his own farm off the reserve, and kept it going until his retirement returning to Sioux Valley to raise a few cows and a large herd of horses. He enjoyed watching sports for all his grandchildren and encouraged them all in their endeavors. He was an original founder and negotiator of the Dakota Oyate Lodge working with Economic Development Officer, Bert Deveaux, from INAC and Elder Louis Duncan to start the official proceedings of the proposal asking permission from Herb Hall to use the land near his homestead. This group enlisted the help of Eli Taylor and Eva McKay. Mr. Taylor spoke to government officials and Mrs. McKay spoke to community members. Thus, the concentrated efforts brought the vision of a personal care home into reality. Evening service will be held at the Brockie Donovan Chapel, 332-8th Street, on Tuesday, March 10, 2015 at 6:30 p.m. Traditional Gathering will commence at his residence in Sioux Valley on Wednesday, March 11, 2015 at 10:00 a.m. and will then proceed to the Sioux Valley Veterans' Hall for a Traditional Service. Interment will follow at the Sioux Valley Anglican Cemetery where he will be laid to rest beside his wife, Rosalie. Our Até/Unkan was a walking Dakota and Ojibway history book who will be forever missed.
