Obituary of William "Jack" John Young

YOUNG: William John "Jack". We said our final goodbye to our father and grandfather on Sunday, April 5, 2015 at the Brandon Regional Health Centre. Jack was born on February 5, 1937 at the Brandon General Hospital. He grew up on the farm north of Griswold, MB and attended school there until grade 11. At age 16, Jack's hockey career started when he received a letter from the Brandon Wheat Kings and was there for a short stint. Jack then lived with his sister Betty Russell in Elkhorn, MB while completing his grade 12, there, he played hockey for the Reeder Royals. His hockey career then continued in Fleming, SK, Virden and Souris. At the age of 26, Jack decided to hang his skates up, but sports still continued in his life. On April 7, 1962 Jack married Evelyn "Donna" Parks in Alexander, MB and they resided on the family farm at Griswold. He played baseball and curled within the Griswold community along with his family. There were many hours spent at the rinks. Jack's hockey experience led him to coach his son's hockey team for four years. If hockey or curling was on the TV Jack was sure to be watching. In 1970, the Young Farm was recognized as a Century Farm and a sign was placed at the end of the lane. The farm has been in the family for six generations. There is a section of bush along the Assiniboine River where Jack spent many hours checking cattle, fences and just enjoying the peace and quiet. During the summer, the family would gather at the river roasting hot dogs and marshmallows. Many hours were dedicated to the land, fixing fence and attending to cattle, which also meant suppers were held in the fields during harvest. Donna could always be found helping Jack with whatever needed to be done. Jack always had a dog on the farm and it was a true symbol that a dog is a man's best friend. As Jack grew up, his neighbors were a part of his life helping each other when needed, and having good times together. Jack was not a traveler and did not stray to far from home. He enjoyed watching his grandchildren grow and would always be teasing them. In 2000, Jack and Donna moved across the road and their son Gary and family reside on the family farm. Together Jack and Donna raised three children Christie (Wayne) Shelby, Samara Zatylny, Gary (Bev) Keri-lynne, Chad (Jen and Ceanna) Young and Denise (Mark) Liam Fobes. A private family graveside service will take place at the Griswold Cemetery on Sunday, April 12, 2015 at 1:00 p.m. Urn bearers will be Jack's grandchildren. All are welcome to attend a Celebration of Jack's life at the Griswold Hall at 2:00 p.m. If friends and relatives so desire, donations in memory of Jack may be made to the Manitoba Lung Association, 8-940 Princess Avenue, Brandon, MB, R7A 0P6. Dad God saw you getting tired and a cure was not to be. So he put his arms around you, and whispered "Come to me" With tearful eyes we watched you, we watched you fade away. Although we loved you dearly we could not make you stay. A golden heart stopped beating, hard working hands now rest, God broke our hearts to prove to us He only takes the best.
