Obituary of Olga "Ollie" Helen Gibson

GIBSON: Olga (Ollie) Helen Gibson, beloved wife of the late Jack Gibson, passed away May 17, 2015 after a short illness at the Brandon Regional Health Centre. Ollie was born in Winnipeg on September 9, 1924. She took her schooling at Norquay School and St. John's High in Winnipeg. During the war, she worked at MacDonald Aircraft working on the Anson IV training planes. She also worked at Canada Safeway and the Hudson's Bay department store. Jack and Ollie were married May 18, 1946. She was predeceased by son Robert Allen in 1957 and Jack in 1981. She was also predeceased by her parents John and Theresa Konyk, brother Andrew and wife Olga, and sister Anna and husband Grant Williams. The Gibsons moved from Transcona to MacGregor, Manitoba in 1960, where Jack assumed the position of district manager for the Manitoba Hydro. They enjoyed their 11 years in MacGregor until they moved to Brandon in 1971. Ollie was hired as the personnel manager at K-Mart shortly after arriving in Brandon and worked in that position until her retirement in 1986. In her retirement, she especially enjoyed travelling with her good friend of over 35 years, Helen McLean. Among their travels were visits to Florida, Arizona and Quebec. Ollie was a member of the Ladies' Auxiliary of Royal Canadian Legion #247 and the Manitoba Hydro Retirees Club. She was also a volunteer at the Nearly New Store for 13 years, which she thoroughly enjoyed. Ollie is survived by her son Jack and his wife Pat, granddaughter Brittany, brother Bill and wife Kay, brother Grant and wife Gloria, and many nieces and nephews and their families. A memorial service will be held on Friday, June 12, 2015 at 1:30 p.m. at the Brockie Donovan Chapel, 332-8th Street, in Brandon. In lieu of flowers, those wishing to do so may make donations to the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Manitoba, #3-824-18th Street, Brandon, MB, R7A 5B7.
