Obituary of Evelyn McLennan

McLENNAN: Evelyn Mary McLennan of Brandon, Manitoba passed away at Dinsdale Personal Care Home on Tuesday, June 9, 2015 at the age of 98 years. Evelyn was born on the family farm 3 ½ miles north of Clanwilliam, Manitoba. She the sixth of eight children born to Charles and Elvina Oman. After attending Lakelet and Grey Schools in the Clanwilliam district, she went on to Dauphin General Hospital to get trained as a Registered Nurse. She later went on to complete that training in the area of Public Health at the University of Toronto in 1973. On July 27, 1943, she married Clark Lysle McLennan and they spent their early years in Pinawa, Manitoba where Clark worked for Manitoba Hydro. They had two sons, David and Gordon. Clark went on to start his own business "Clark's Corner" and Evelyn went on to start a long career with Medical Services. She worked initially at the Fort Alexander Indian Hospital and later in the Pine Falls and Brandon Public Health Centre. She retired in 1983. In that long and wonderful life I shall feature a few areas. She was hard worker always devoted to her work and to her family. She prided herself in the fact that she was a charter member and past matron of the Pine Falls chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star. On coming to Brandon and joining Central United Church, she enjoyed her involvement with Unit 8 of the United Church Women. She was long-time curler and went out on a high joining the curling team of June Little from the Brandon Curling Club to win the Provincial Golden Gal's Championship in 1994. Evelyn enjoyed her move to Lion's Manor in 1996 and in particular her long-time friendship with Margaret Templeton. Evelyn was long plagued with poor hearing and diagnosed with Parkinson's disease during her 80th year. She is survived by her sons David and Gordon, her sister-in-law Margaret Saunders of Minnedosa, her cousin Irene Wright of Richmond, B.C. and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband Clark in April 1978, parents Charles (1976) and Elvina Oman (1958), infant sister Joyce (1925), sister Irene Robertson (1978), brother Harry Oman (2004), sister Viola Sillen (2008), brother Herman Oman (1995), sister Selma Hawkins (2002) and sister Mable Hillstrand (2003). The Memorial Service will be held at the Brockie Donovan Chapel, 332-8th Street, on Thursday, June 18, 2015 at 1:00 p.m. with Rev. Ken DeLisle officiating. Interment will follow at the Brandon Cemetery. Donations in memory of Evelyn may be made to Dinsdale Personal Care Home, 510-6th Street, Brandon, MB, R7A 3N9.
