Obituary of Margaret Irene Hastings

HASTINGS: Margaret Irene (Taylor) Hastings passed away peacefully with her daughter at her side at the Delwynda Personal Care Home on Saturday, September 5, 2015 at the age of 88 years. Margaret was born in Griswold, Manitoba December 7, 1926. Margaret completed her entire schooling in Oak Lake and then attended Normal School in Winnipeg, earning her Teaching Certificate in 1947. Her first teaching position was at Fleming School in Brandon. She completed an exchange teaching position to England in 1952, and had the honour of attending the Queen's Coronation. Prior to leaving for her teaching position in England, Mom had a blind date with Floyd Hastings, and as soon as her year of teaching in England was completed, Floyd met her in Montreal where they were married August 1, 1953. Dad and Mom lived in Virden for a year and then in 1954, opened their own GMC dealership in Rivers. Mom was very active in the community - she belonged to Eastern Star, the United Church, Riverdale Hospital Guild, Legion Auxiliary in Rivers, and the Curling Club, as well as an active substitute teacher. In 1999, Mom moved to Brandon where she resided at Colonial Estates for two years and Riverheights Terrace for 13 years - she loved to socialize with everyone so this was a perfect setting for her. Mom was known for her kindness, caring and compassionate personality. She helped many people throughout her lifetime and always had a cheery smile for everyone! To Mom her family was everything. Any chance Mom had to be with her family she was always there. She had unconditional love for all of us. Left to cherish her generous heart and spirit are her two daughters Helen (Keith) Cassan and Dianne (Bob) Fotheringham; her grandchildren Jeff (Annie), Trent (Amy), Teagan (fiancé Luke) and her precious great grandchildren Emry, Norah and Nevin Cassan. She is also survived by her two brothers Bud (Jessie), Fred (Frances), sister-in-law Marg Taylor and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Very close nieces Gerrie Taylor (Brandon) and Susan Wolfe (Grimsby, Ontario). She was predeceased by her husband Floyd in 1971, her parents Jean and Herb Taylor, brother Stuart, special aunt Dorothy and uncle Percy Lowres, Ivan, Doris and Betty McCaw and all of Floyd's immediate family. The celebration of Margaret's life was held at the Oak Lake United Church on Thursday, September 10, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. Don Sellsted officiating. Interment took place at Oak Lake Cemetery.
