Obituary of Gladys Wright

It is with heartfelt sadness that the family of Gladys Wright (nee Gurney) announce her peaceful passing on September 10, 2015 at the age of 85 years surrounded by loved ones. On November 4th, 1929, Mom was born in Eyebrow, Saskatchewan to George and Elsie Gurney. The eldest of a family of twelve, life was full of fun and laughter (and baby-sitting!). Upon graduating from high-school, friends talked Mom into trying nursing and it was there that she found her true calling. In 1951, she graduated as a Registered Nurse from Regina General and never looked back. A few years later she met her soul-mate and on June 21, 1958 she and Jack were married in Eyebrow, Saskatchewan. Soon afterward they moved to Waskada where they farmed for sixteen years. Those sixteen years were full, raising five daughters, hauling grain, milking cows and nursing in Melita and Deloraine. Life was busy. Then, in 1975, Mom and Dad sold the farm and moved to Deloraine, where Mom nursed at the hospital and was Director of Nursing at BrenDelWin Lodge until her retirement in 1991. The memories of those years in Deloraine and the friends she made there were very special to her. In 2003, they moved to Brandon and in 2009, three years after Dad's passing, Mom moved to Winnipeg. Although she moved several times in the last years of her life, she was warm and kind and made friends wherever she went. Mom was a fabulous cook (her apple pie was the best!) and a wonderful caring nurse, but first and foremost she was a wonderful mother. Her happiest times were spent with her daughters, sons-in-law and grandchildren who were so very precious to her. She was immensely proud of her family and all of their accomplishments. Her family was the love and light of her life. Christmases at Grandma and Grandpa's were special for all of us and the memories of those times are a part of who we are and will live on forever in our hearts. Mom will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by her five daughters, Nancy, Lori, Sheri, Jackie and Kara; sons-in-law Greg, Bill and Len and grandchildren, Jennifer, Jeff (Lyndsey), Evan, Kyle, Steve (Anita), Kendra (Tony), Sara (Marc). Also remaining to cherish her memory are her brothers and sisters and their families, Chuck and Marlene, Shirley and Herb, Elaine, Bea, Joan, Merilyn and Bryan, Ron and George and Jean; sisters-in-law Isobel and Phyllis. She will also be greatly missed by many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends both young and old. She was predeceased by her parents, George and Elsie Gurney; husband Jack; sisters Jean and Eileen; brother Ken; brothers-in-law Fred, Doug, George, Garfield, Raymond and Larry. A very sincere thank-you goes out to the staff at Seine River Retirement Residence for their warmth and caring; to Kathy Misurka-Feal and the home-care staff that supported Mom for the last few years; to Dr. Van Rensburg and his staff for their support and caring; and to the 4th floor staff at the Victoria General Hospital for their warmth and support in the last week of her life. Each of you touched Mom's heart and brightened her days. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial donations in Gladys' memory be made to the Southwest Regional Foundation, Box 338, Deloraine, MB, R0M 0M0 (please designate to "Deloraine area"), to the Parkinson's Society of Manitoba, 7 - 414 Westmount Drive, Winnipeg, MB, R2J 1P2 or to a charity of choice. In accordance with Mom's wishes, cremation has taken place and a private family burial will be held at a later date. Thank you Mom for everything you have given us. We love you and will hold your memory forever in our hearts.
