Obituary of Gladys E. L. Moffatt

MOFFATT: Gladys E.L. passed away peacefully at the Brandon Regional Health Centre on Tuesday, December 29, 2015. Born on July 3, 1923 in Margaret, MB, she was the third child of J. E. (Bert) and Teresa Morrow. She received her education in Margaret and took a secretaries course at the Wheat City Business College. She held positions at Wawanesa, Souris Airport, Minnedosa, Clear Lake and Brandon before her marriage to James Moffatt of Carroll, MB, on October 18, 1947. Gladys was a busy farm wife and mother to Grant, Neil, Lois, Mark and Norma, taking an interest in their sports, 4-H projects and other activities. She taught Sunday school at Carroll and Brandon, served as a Trustee of the Carroll Consolidated School Board, Carroll Memorial Hall Committee and was a Charter Member of the Carroll U. C. W. She was also a member of Margaret, Carroll and Souris United Church. In 1969, the family moved to Brandon where Jim was employed by the Manitoba Pork Producers Marketing Board. Gladys became involved with the West End Community Centre, Central United Church, Brandon Curling Club, Glen Lea Golf Club, Fleming School Library, Meals on Wheels and the Daly House Museum. She also enjoyed her time spent as a tourist greeter. Gladys loved being in her garden, travelling across Canada, most of the United States including Alaska, Hawaii, as well as Europe and New Zealand. Her family and grandchildren's activities were of great interest to her. She was a supportive wife in Jim's involvement in the farm, fair boards and his work with Manitoba Pork. Friends and family appreciated her newsy letters and remarked she was the best letter writer. Predeceased by her loving husband Jim in 1991, infant daughter Susan Lee in 1959, her parents, brother Edgar Morrow, sisters Helen Larsen and Jean Merryfield. Left to mourn her loss are Grant (Connie), Neil (Joan), Lois Fowler (Brian), Mark (Cindy Beyak), Norma Purdy (Allan), 10 Grandchildren, 10 Great-Grandchildren, brothers-in-Law Kris Larsen, Earl Merryfield, sisters-in-Law Vi Morrow, Cora Moffatt and several nieces and nephews. A Celebration of Gladys' Life will be held in the spring on Saturday, June 4, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. at the Central United Church, 327-8th Street. Flowers are gratefully declined. If friends so desire, donations may be made to the Brandon Regional Health Centre Foundation, 150 McTavish Avenue East, Brandon, Manitoba, R7A 2B3, or to a charity of one's choice.
