Obituary of Evelyn Chambers

CHAMBERS: With family by her side, Margaret "Evelyn" Chambers (nee Myers) passed away peacefully at her residence, Valleyview Care Centre, on Wednesday, March 2, 2016. Evelyn was born February 3, 1922 at the home farm near Belmont, MB, (the first child of nine) to George and Mattie Myers. Evelyn attended school and church in Belmont. Her summers were usually spent with her Grandma and Grandpa Campbell where she helped with chores and housekeeping. In 1940, Evelyn married Russell Chambers at Knox United Church, Brandon, MB. They resided in Brandon until 1953 when they purchased the farm north of Dunrea, MB. Evelyn and Russ worked hand in hand together on the farm. In 1964, they retired from farming and moved to Belmont where Russ was employed as Custodian at the Belmont School. Again, Evelyn worked alongside her husband. At age 55, Evelyn began work in the Meat Department at Sykes Grocery Store and later worked as a Health Care Aid with Belmont Home Care. Evelyn belonged to several organizations in Belmont including: Rae Rebekah Lodge #58, 4-H as a Leader, UCW, Museum, Centennial Committee, Curling Club, Sunday School, United Church Choir, Seniors Drop In Centre, Red Cross, Hall Committee and the 1993 Myers family reunion. Some of her interests and achievements were sewing, quilting, knitting, gardening, crafts, baking and preserving vegetables and fruits, reading, needlework and numerous positions in the Rae Rebekah Lodge. She also enjoyed spectator sports such as baseball and curling as well as watching Blue Jays baseball and curling on TV. Evelyn loved her flower gardens and her indoor plants. Her sewing skills included everything from simple dresses to bridesmaid dresses, curtains, cushions and crafts. The Red Cross and Child and Family Services received many of her knitted articles. Evelyn especially enjoyed being at the cabin at Pelican Lake on weekends where many of her family members would congregate. Russ and Evelyn celebrated their 62nd Wedding Anniversary in June 2002. Evelyn is survived by children, Gene (Sylvia), Merle (Darryl) Darling, Carol (Mike) Boreskie, Lois Bjornson (Rick Saint) and Colleen Gillies, 14 grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren and one great great grandchild. Evelyn was predeceased by parents, George (1985) and Mattie (1991) Myers, husband, Russell Chambers (2003), son-in-law, Bob Gillies (1997). Funeral service was held Wednesday, March 9, 2016 at Brockie Donovan Funeral Chapel with Rev Craig Miller officiating. Urn bearers were grandchildren, Kevin Chambers, Jody Penner and Steve Boreskie. A Dedication and Honour Guard was presented by the Rebekah Lodge. Interment followed at Rosewood Memorial Gardens, Brandon, MB.
