Obituary of Mary Louisa Hewitt

HEWITT: Mary Louisa Hewitt (nee Winnie English), passed away at her residence, Hillcrest Place, on March 12, 2016 at the age of 85 years. Mary was born to parents, Melvin and Winnifred English, on November 4, 1930 in Harding, Manitoba. Sadly, her Mother died when Mary was three days old. She was raised by her Auntie Charlotte and Uncle Fred Cormack until she was five – then raised by her Father and Granny English. Mary attended school at Harding until she was 18. She then moved to Brandon to work. She met Bob Hyndman and married him in 1955. They lived at Rapid City and had three sons. They divorced amicably in 1969 and remained good friends. Mary raised her children in Rivers until 1980, moving to Alberta, then returning to Brandon in 1984 to help raise her granddaughter, Rose. Mary's adult life was spent raising her family and working. Her work history is eclectic – cook, waitress, secretary, carpenter, security guard and salesperson. She was also a mature student at B.U. for two years in the mid 80's, enjoying courses in Philosophy, Religion and Creative Writing. Mary is survived by her son Grant (Jack), wife Jane and family; granddaughter Rose; her cousin and lifelong best friend Molly McLellan; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her son Billy (1957) and son Rick (1989). A come and go tea to celebrate Mary's life was held at the George Brockie Fellowship Centre on March 17, 2016. Donations in memory of Mary may be made to Samaritan House Ministries, 630 Rosser Avenue, Brandon, MB, R7A 0K7 or the Manitoba Lung Association, P.O. Box 20029, Brandon, MB, R7A.
