Obituary of Stella Smith

SMITH: Stella Smith (née Salay), formerly of Brandon, beloved wife of Stan, passed away peacefully at the Dauphin Personal Care Home on Wednesday, August 24, 2016 at the age of 89 years, surrounded by family. Stella was born January 7, 1927 in Rossendale, MB, moving at an early age to Edwin where she was raised and attended school. She was active in the women's softball team as a teenager, moving to Portage in 1946 to work at McDonald's Food Market. She married her husband, Stan, on October 29, 1949, and they shared 66 years together. They moved to Brandon and raised two children, daughter Joan and son Terry. During their early years, Stella was involved with the Y.M.C.A. Mothers Club and the school library. She taught Sunday School at Knox United Church, where she attended throughout her life. Her life centered around her home and family. She liked to read and enjoyed her garden and yard. Stella and her husband traveled for a number of years after his retirement, enjoying trips to the Bahamas, Hawaii and Florida. She enjoyed spending many summers at Joan's cabin at Sportsman's Park. Stella was predeceased by her mother Mary in 1939, her father Peter in 1971, a sister, her grandparents, step-mother Irene in 2012 and brother Vincent in 2013. She leaves to mourn her husband Stan, daughter Joan (Stephen Roznowsky) of Dauphin, son Terry of Brandon, grandchildren Chris Andrews of Shilo, and Jordan, Geoffrey and Jarred Smith of Brandon. There are also several great-grandchildren. She will also be lovingly remembered by her brother Joe (Shirley) Salay of Winnipeg, sister Helen (Herb Calverley), sister Julie (Darryl Danner) of Winnipeg, brother Gerry (Robin) Salay of Langley, B.C., and sister-in-law Marie Salay of Portage, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank the staff at the Dauphin Personal Care Home for all the care, kindness and compassion shown towards Stella in the past three years. A Service of Remembrance to Celebrate Stella's Life will be held at Brockie Donovan Chapel, 332-8th Street, on Thursday, September 1, 2016 at 1:00 p.m. with Rev. Lydia Glawson officiating. Interment will follow in the Brandon Cemetery. Flowers gratefully declined; donations in memory of Stella may be made to the Manitoba Heart and Stroke Foundation, Unit 3-824-18th Street, Brandon, MB R7A 5B7 or to the Dauphin Personal Care Home, 625-3rd Street Southwest, Dauphin, MB R7N 1R7.
