Obituary of Stan Smith

SMITH: Stan Smith, formerly of Brandon, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, August 30, 2016 at the Dauphin Personal Care Home at the age of 87 years; just five short days after his beloved wife, Stella. Stan was born October 26, 1928, in Portage la Prairie where he was raised and attended school. After school, he worked for Newman's Red and White Store in Portage la Prairie for 5 years. He came to Brandon in 1947 and started work at Brandon Packers, becoming a shipping foreman in 1950, and worked there until the plant burnt. He then worked for Allied Van Lines until Pool Packers opened. He joined the Sales Team and traveled throughout Saskatchewan and Manitoba. When Pool Packers was sold, he joined Burns Meats and continued as a meat salesman, which he loved to do---sell meat and talk to storekeepers!! He retired in October of 1989. He and his wife, Stella, traveled for several years visiting Hawaii, Florida and the Bahamas. Stan was a member of the ACT Club for many years and attended Knox United Church. He was a big hockey fan of the Brandon Wheat Kings, seeing every game possible. Stan had a great sense of humor and was a friend to both young and old, volunteering at things and yet being underfoot--to most he was just another "big kid"!! Stan and Stella moved to Dauphin 3 1/2 years ago due to failing health and to be closer to family. Stan and Stella (née Salay) were married October 29, 1949 in Portage and made their home in Brandon for over 60 years. They raised two children: Joan and Terry. Surviving are daughter Joan (Stephen Roznowsky) and son Terry; four grandchildren, Chris Andrews, Jordan, Geoffrey, and Jarred Smith and several great-grandchildren; nephews Randy (Helen) Smith of Oak Lake, Robert (Kathy) Smith of Regina and Dale (Charlotte) Smith of Winnipeg; also surviving are brothers-in-law Joe (Shirley), Gerry (Robin); sisters-in-law Helen (Herb Calverley), Julie (Darryl Danner) and Marie Salay. There are also several other nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents Thomas and Edith Smith, his brothers Dennis, Bert, Jack (Alice) and Fred Smith and two sisters Gladys (Merv Sawyer) and Eva Taylor. A Celebration of both Stan and Stella's Life will be held together at Brockie Donovan Chapel, 332-8th Street, on Thursday, September 1, 2016 at 1:00 p.m. with Lydia Glawson officiating. Interment will follow in the Brandon Cemetery. Flowers gratefully declined; donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Society of Manitoba, 4B-457-9th Street, Brandon, MB, R7A 4A9, or to the Dauphin Personal Care Home, 625-3rd Street S.W., Dauphin, MB, R7N 1R7.
