Obituary of Karen Swanson

SWANSON: Karen Johanne Swanson (née Sorenson), beloved Mother of Darlene (Harvey) Stanger, passed away peacefully at her residence, Hillcrest Place, on Monday, October 24, 2016 at the age of 101 years. Karen was born on April 11, 1915 in Hastrup, Snoldelev Parish District of Tune, Denmark. Karen came to Canada in 1930 with her family, settling in Saskatchewan. She married Sven Luther Johannes Swanson on July 4, 1935 in Percival, SK. They farmed at Parkman, SK until 1946 moving to Brandon where they continued to farm. Karen and Luther owned and operated the White Swan Trailer Court and Swanson's IGA Grocery Store. She enjoyed many winters in Mesa, Arizona as well as a trip back to Denmark in 1990. She was a Charter Member of Grace Lutheran Church, L.W.M.L. member, and she took pleasure in bowling, golfing, knitting and crocheting. Karen is survived by her daughter Darlene (Harvey) Stanger, grandchildren Lisa (Jake), Darren (Diane), great-grandchildren Brooklyn, Ethan, Tyler and Ella, sister-in-law Elsie Sorenson and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents Christian and Olga Sorenson, husband Luther Swanson, daughter Anetta Swanson, brothers Tom and Viggo (Dorothy), sisters Gerda (Norman), Elsie, Greta, Inger (Lester) and twin sister Mary (Nils and Alf), brother-in-law Milton (Martha), nieces, Gloria and Ella (Lloyd) and nephew Bryan. A Celebration of Karen's Life will be held at Grace Lutheran Church, 3101 Victoria Avenue, on Saturday, October 29, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. Interment will follow at Rosewood Memorial Gardens. Donations in memory of Karen may be made to the Grace Lutheran Church Memorial Fund, 3101 Victoria Avenue, Brandon, MB, R7B 3P3 or to a charity of choice.
