John "Jack" Jones

Obituary of John "Jack" Henry Jones

JONES: John (Jack) June 6, 1939 – November 17, 2016 It is with deep sadness we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father and grandfather. John passed away peacefully on Thursday, November 17, 2016 at the Assiniboine Centre with family by his side. He was born in Dunrea, Manitoba, on the family farm, where he spent his youth. When the family moved to Virden, Manitoba, in 1953, John worked briefly with the oil rigs. Later, he was employed at John Deer (Brandon); Frank Lawson & Sons; Firestone and Binkley Motors. In spite of health problems due to cardiovascular illness, he established his own handyman service, which then led to his love of working with wood. Evidence of John's creative handiwork can be seen throughout Brandon; in the form of decks, arbours, and fences and, most recently, with the help of a friend, a sunroom, of which he was so proud to have accomplished. Family and friends benefited from his excellent wood working skills and John so enjoyed the time spent in his workshop. John enjoyed golfing, fishing and camping and loved socializing with family and friends. Over the years, he and Janice enjoyed many travels together, including a trip to Europe, cruises and a most enjoyable vacation in Hawaii. John was very proud of his three grandchildren and so enjoyed spending time with them. He was happy to have been able to attend his grandson's graduation in June. John is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Janice (née Reid); daughter Debbie (Murray) Haywood and three grandchildren: Michael, Justine and Katrina. He is also survived by sisters: Elsie Sexey and Delphine (Harold) McLenaghan; brothers: Richard (Carol) Jones and Bill Jones; brother-in-law Harvey Myers; sister-in-law and brother-in-law Tom and Marlene Carson (Leduc, Alberta) and many nieces and nephews. He was pre-deceased by two infant children: Darcy (1963), Cindy (1973); his parents: Elizabeth and John Jones (Sr.); sister Dorothy Myers and sister-in-law Darlene Jones. A Memorial Service was held for John on Wednesday, November 23, 2016 at the Brockie Donovan Chapel. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of John may be made to the Heart & Stroke Foundation, Unit 3-2430 Victoria Avenue, Brandon, MB, R7B 0M5.
