Obituary of Ron Roosen

ROOSEN: Ronald (Ron) Ray passed away peacefully on Monday, December 5, 2016 at his residence, Valleyview Care Centre, Brandon Manitoba. Sadly mourning his passing are his daughters: Wendy (Bob) and Diane (Larry); grandchildren Landon and Morghan; brother Arne. Also mourning his passing are his extended family and many friends. Dad was born and raised on the family farm near Antelope, Saskatchewan on November 10, 1926, the middle child of five brothers. He received his education at a one room school near Webb and left school at an early age to work on the family farm. Dad enlisted in the Royal Canadian Navy during World War II, serving as an Officers' Cook stationed in Montreal and Halifax. After the war he worked in a logging camp near Kapuskasing, Ontario and then returned to the prairies to work for the Manitoba Power Commission, bringing electricity to rural communities. In Treherne, Manitoba Dad met a country school teacher, Gladys Hurst and they were married on June 12, 1948. Dad and Mom lived in several small communities in western Manitoba, developing many friendships and memories. In the early 50's they set down roots in Austin, Manitoba where Dad became the District Supervisor for Manitoba Hydro. It was here that they had their daughters Wendy and Diane. Dad was an active member of the community and held office in various organizations. Dad and Mom made many lifelong friendships and memories in Austin that they cherished. In 1966, the family moved to Minnedosa where Ron was the District Supervisor for Manitoba Hydro. This was also the year the cottage was purchased at Delta Beach. Dad loved spending time with family and friends hunting, fishing, camping, trips in the motorhome and vacations at the cottage. The annual moose hunt to the Porcupine Provincial Park with his hunting buddies was one of the highlights of the year for Dad and also makes for many yarns of the hunt and camaraderie with his hunting buddies. Dad retired from Manitoba Hydro in 1983 after 37 years of service. Dad and Mom moved to Brandon in 1987 to enjoy retirement. Motorhome trips to USA and across Canada, fishing with the grandchildren and spending time at the cottage at Delta filled their retirement years. Dad was a master tinkerer and could MacGyver anything. He always had a project on the go and lovingly helped his family with theirs. Dad liked a good game of cards and a rousing game of horseshoes on the beach at the lake. He took great pride in his family and their accomplishments. Dad was a good listener, loved to visit and share memories. Ron was predeceased by his loving wife Gladys; father Ottar; mother Dorothy and brothers: Kenneth, Leonard and Ralph. Dad will be sadly missed and forever in our hearts. See you later alligator, after a while crocodile. Cremation has taken place and a service will be held at the Bethel Cemetery, near Treherne, Manitoba in the spring of 2017.
