Whilst I appreciate that this commentary is a little belated, this is because we are accustomed to rattling Norm's cage from this side of the pond around the turn of the year.
With great sadness we learned only recently of his passing some 12 months ago.
We first met "Norman from Edmonton" sometime in 1998 or 1999. We ran a newspaper shop alongside our post office in Harrogate, North Yorkshire, England and Norm would pop in of a Sunday morning for his paper. He was lodging just up the road from us and working in the UK in Wetherby, a small town some 10 miles away.
We got talking and when we found out where he came from we had a subject in common because we had recently returned from a trip to relatives on Vancouver Island and we had toured B.C.. We both were familiar with Port Alberni.
We continued to meet once a week (to supply his newspaper) and became friendly. Norman, together with me and my wife Sue spent the Millenial New Years Eve touring the bars in Harrogate, and when it all got too noisy, just before midnight we sat together on a park bench on The Stray, Harrogate's parkland and watched the fireworks go off all around us as the new century came in.
When Norman returned to Canada our two sons Alex and Chris at various times on their round the world gap year tours called in on Norm and Linda.
A lovely man so easy to be with. We will miss him.

It looks like we missed the boat on Norm's passing. We lost touch over the years as sometimes happens in the course of events. So, I'm not sure that this commemoration
is very well timed. Norm, Dale Richardson, Dennis Madsen, and I shared an apartment together during our U. of S. early days (1964 or 1965 I think). I'll always remember us getting a phone call (it was a wrong number) from a group of girls who thought we were part of a local band in Saskatoon. We pretended to be, really hamming it up and eventually got invited over to their place. I think Norm was the drummer, I was the lead guitarist and singer along with the others, Dennis and Dale and Glen Scharf, a frequent visitor to our apartment playing various band roles. Anyway, we got over there and the girl that really knew the band wasn't there. So we had a pretty good time for a few hours until she got home and things got a little dicey. We left rather quickly. I'll always remember Norm as "the rock" in our apartment relationship. We played some football together, studied together (though not enough as we should have), and did a lot of growing up together. My sincere condolences to the family and friends of Norm. I wish the course of events had been kinder to the connection of a friend.
Sincerely,
Barry Cosgrove

Susan and I would like to send our sincere condolences to all of Norman's family and friends. I first met "Stormin Norman" In 1969 when I entered first year at WCVM. Norm was one of the first to say hello and welcome me to the college! He was always smiling and larger-than-life! I was never the excellent student that he was but we did share an interest in pathology so we did get to know each other better than we might have.
Over the years we stayed in touch through mutual friends and our professional interests. Norm was always a friendly resource for my many pathology questions over the years. This was both important personally and professionally inspirational to me as my first 12 years of practice took me into the relative isolation of Northern British Columbia. Norm was always ready and able to help with my many questions.
I count Norm as one of the most positive influences on me in my career in veterinary medicine. And more important,......... I counted him a true friend!
We will miss him dearly

Dear Lynda and Family. I met Norm at the Vet Emerg in Edmonton where I was a tech. Norm would bring in a double headed microscope and we would spend hours looking over slides until an emergency would come in. He had such patience and a sense of humour. Everyone loved him. We connected many times through the years and it is very sad to hear that he is gone. He will truly be missed.

Hi Lynda and Family,
My condolences again on Norm's passing. He was a great friend and colleague and collaborator and will long be remembered. He has left behind many great memories, great example, and much inspiration that will live on here in Dublin and I am sure many other places. Here he impacted many dozens of veterinary students and several veterinary clinical pathology trainees, and myself with his passions and spirit and charm during our weekly training and consulting sessions over the last 5 years. I was delighted to have spent some time with him in person here in Dublin and a couple times in Brandon. Best, Peter

Dear Lynda and family,
I am so sorry to read of Norm's passing this morning. As an owner of a single vet practice, Norm was one of my favourite people to bounce cases off, he taught me so much. We discussed not just the pathology, but the pet and it's people.
Norm embraced our profession with laughter and a sense of the absurd. I never called Norm without some time on the clock so we could rant to each other about politics, the weather, and life in general. Thinking of you with a smile Norm.

Dear Lynda and family, 1981 was the first time I met Dr Lowes when I used to ride my bike down the streets of Vancouver to deliver Norm punch biopsy specimens of skin from wolf eels as part of a Vancouver Aquarium summer project! He was so helpful! Since then our careers sporadically overlapped having worked in gov and private labs. I admired his tenacity, honesty and determination in dealing with life's challenges. Dear Lynda,
My deepest condolences to you and your family.
Norm was such an amazing person.
I first met him in the 90's when I was a new graduate in Edmonton.
Norm always had such a positive attitude and was willing to share information and teach anything he could.
One example of this, after speaking to him on a case I had when I was a new grad, he offered to come to the clinic I was at and show me the proper technique for acquiring a biopsy for a difficult anatomical location. He arrived in less than an hour and the procedure was smooth and educational.
Every time I called to discuss a clinical pathology result, he was always happy to speak with me.
He was really one of the good guys in the profession and I always felt better after speaking with him or spending time with him at local seminars.
I always considered him to be one of my mentors in veterinary medicine.
Rest In Peace Norm.

My fondest Memory of Norm was a call we shared a few years ago (November 12, 2012), while Brandon was flooding and Calgary was a dry as a bone. We had just started to use his telecytology service and had a tricky case of Chronic lymphocytic Leukemia. It was a Saturday, late in the day and he was his wonderful positive self. We got her on therapy and she continues to do well to this day.
Thank you Norm - you were an inspiration to us all.

Dear Lynda,
I am deeply saddened to hear of Norms passing. At our last class reunion in Waterton national park in September 2012, we all shared memories of our wonderful time at WCVM. Norm looked so good, living with the same passion for life after he was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease as he did before.
My first day as I nervously walked over to WCVM for classes in August 1968 I was greeted by this stocky young, fit gentleman. He shook my hand and introduced himself as Norm Lowes and welcomed me to the college. It was this act of kindness that I will never forget.
With sympathy to you and your family, Lynda.

To my dear friend Norm, Lynda, and to all of your family...
There aren't enough words to express how much I will miss him - how much he has influenced my life and my career as an Animal Health Technologist.
He taught me so much about cytology. He taught me to believe and trust myself with what I saw in those images. I know that he respected the work of techs so much - and that means so much to all of us in this field - I know. Everyone at McKenzie Vet shares my sorrow and has expressed their sadness and condolences.
We worked together on so many cases, reviewed and picked apart so many images. I will always fondly remember those times. He even gave us special code names from the start - he was C1, and I was C2 (Cytology 1 and 2) :)
Our trip to Saskatoon in November 2016, to the SAVT conference where we conducted our cytology lecture, will be an experience I will never forget. I would have never done anything like that without his encouragement. He made me brave, and pushed me to the limit of my comforts in public speaking,
I will forever treasure the textbooks, and the microscope - which I will call "Norm". I found myself thanking him out loud the other day when I was successful at diagnosing a cytology on a pet rat. I feel like he is around me when I am working on cytology - helping me and talking me through it.
He was a special, special human being. He had a light of his own. You would be hard pressed today to find an academic of his caliber who was so giving, friendly and enthusiastically willing to help anyone.
Lynda - I can see why Norm has always referred to you as his "Angel". You have been so brave, so welcoming and sweet. My heart goes out to you and all of your family. I will see you soon on Feb 4th.
With love,
Jen

Norm was a great guy. He was a positive force in the world. The postings to the ASVCP listserv and to this tribute wall give some idea of how many people's lives he touched in a meaningful way. He cared about people and they knew it. He absolutely adored you, Lynda (I always heard him refer to you as "Lyndy" or "my angel"). And boy, was he tough. When he told me he was back to spinning after his thyroidectomy it made me think of a friend of mine who is an avid runner and said he went to a spin class one time and it kicked his ass - and he was in his 20s! I recall Norm saying that life only gives us what we can handle. Well, I guess he could handle a hell of a lot. Sincere condolences to his entire family. RIP, friend.

I met Norm at spin class five years ago in Brandon and he filled the room with his smile, attitude and gentle giant ism.
We became close friends and cycled over 10,000 kms together. It was never too windy, wet, cold or icy for a ride with the Road Warrior. He took many tele cytology calls on the shoulder of the Trans Canada highway. Roadside Cytology in action.
His outlook on life is evident in a quote he told me early in our riding days..." you can only peddle a bicycle in one direction and that is forward".
His amazing courage and determination facing many life challenges coupled with " care and compassion for other people and animals as first priority " places Norm in a privileged domain. I learned a lot about life from Stormin Norman!
So as Norm would say..."Get over it and get on with it!"

Lynda and family,
I am deeply saddened to learn of Norman's passing. We were friends for nearly 35 years since our early days at WCVM. Norm was doubly blessed with a sharp, adventuresome mind and a welcoming, enthusiastic personality. His get "out there" and make a "positive change" attitude was his strength. Even in his difficult times he was planning to bicycle across Canada. This was Stormy Norm, a life force to be reckoned with. Anyone who knew Norm in his professional life and his personal life saw quickly that Norm was a big softy. This is why Norm was such a respected veterinary clinical pathologist/cytologist as he was a passionate, caring animal lover and lover of life.
I was honored and blessed to call Norm a FRIEND. I will miss you. Rest in Peace.

Dear Lynda,
I had the privilege and honour to learn & work with Norm at the Lab in Calgary. I count those years amongst some of the best in my life. Norm's kind and giving personality along with his infectious optimism and ability to live life to the fullest had and will always have a huge influence on me.
I chose to work the "dreaded" Saturday shift at the Lab because it meant working with Norm (and either Coors or P.J) and we used to have such fun together that it didn't even feel like work. He was always so keen to share & explain his histology findings or simply take the time to answer any question any of us might have. I never once experienced any stress in his presence.
His love of photography and watching him always carry his camera around kickstarted what would become my passion for photography too and I thank him for that.
Over the years since Calgary, our paths took us to different corners of the world but I always loved receiving his updates and hearing of his happiness in Brandon with you. He never ceased to amaze me with what he was up to whether it was cycling 30kms or growing his internet cytology business. He was simply full of passion for life.
In the end, knowing Norm and having been blessed to cross paths with him has made me a better person and I shall miss him tremendously. I will think of him whenever I see the stars sparkle in the sky because that is exactly what he always was....a star.
You are in my thoughts and prayers Lynda as is the rest of his family and I send my love to all of you.
