Obituary of Adelaide Zenk

ZENK: On Tuesday, February 7th, 2017, our beloved mother and grandmother, Adelaide Zenk (née Brown), peacefully passed away with family by her side at the Assiniboine Hospital at the age of 91 years. Mom was born in the Orkney Islands, Scotland on January 12, 1926 to Peter and Annie Jean Brown. The family, along with younger sister Eva, travelled to Canada when Mom was two years old where they made their permanent home here in Brandon. Mom attended King George, Earl Haig, and Brandon Collegiate. Her strong work ethic started at age 14 and led to numerous jobs including setting up pins at the Bowling Alley, clerk at the Metropolitan Store, Brandon Packers, Eaton's and finally 25 years at Anglo Canadian Oils which later became Royalite, Gulf and Petro Can. As a child, Mom won several medals in Highland Dancing competitions which led to a lifelong love of dance. Dad and Mom once won a prize for the "Old Time Waltz" at the Prince Eddy Hotel in Brandon. In her youth, Mom loved to skate at the East End rink. She made many lifelong friends in the bowling circles, winning many trips to points west in the Western Canada Bowling Competitions. She enjoyed golfing while health permitted and had a passion for sports on TV which became such a pleasure for her in later years when her health was failing. She was a member of St. Andrews and later First Presbyterian Church and always enjoyed her pastoral visitors who continued to come right until the last day of Mom's life. Mom enjoyed several trips to Hawaii and a trip with Mom Brown in 1976 to Scotland, as well as many family trips to Toronto and several points in USA. Mom is survived by her son Rod Zenk and wife Pam, grandson Derek (Karleigh), great grandchildren Ryan and Mac and grandson Jordan; daughter Brenda Pugh (Bill) and grand-daughters Breanna Hall (Brad), great grandchildren Hudson and Paxton, Jaime (Jamie) Clemmensen, Amanda Pilloud (Matt) and grandson Christopher Pugh. Also left to cherish her memory is sister Marina Hromadka and many nieces and nephews. Mom was predeceased by her devoted husband Christopher (Gus) Zenk in 1981. We are so thankful to Mom for the loving care and devotion she gave to Dad for 4 ½ years during his illness before passing, a true role model for her family. Also predeceasing her were parents Peter and Annie Jean Brown; brothers Harold and Alastair; sisters Eva Robson and Hilda Ford. A private family funeral service was held on Monday, February 13th, 2017 with Reverend Dr. Dong-Ha Kim and Arlene Robertson officiating. Burial took place at Rosewood Memorial Gardens. Her family would like to thank all Mom's friends and caregivers for the love and support throughout the years. While Mom is finally at peace, free from pain, we will miss her and look forward to being reunited in our heavenly home. Flowers are gratefully declined. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Adelaide may be made to The Arthritis Society, 100A-1465 Buffalo Place, Winnipeg, Manitoba, R3T 1L8 or to a charity of choice.
