Obituary of Sonia Chalanchuk

CHALANCHUK: Sonia passed peacefully on May 4th, 2017 at Fairview Personal Care Home in Brandon. She was born to Anton and Katie Krysowaty in Olha, MB on June 12th, 1930. Sonia moved to Brandon, MB in her late teens and worked at Barney's Restaurant at the bus depot on Princess Avenue. She often talked fondly of both her job and her employers. Sonia married John Chalanchuk, the love of her life, in 1952 and they farmed near Rounthwaite, MB until John's passing in 1994. To say Sonia was an exceptional gardener and home maker would be an understatement. She attended the Ukrainian Orthodox Church and loved preparing and serving at many spring teas and fall suppers. Her biggest passion, however, were her many grandchildren. She loved hosting big family gatherings, and as much as the rest of us try, her perogies and cabbage rolls will never be re-created. She is survived by her eldest son Allen (Pat) Chalanchuk, and daughter Patty (Jeff) Wolfe, and many grandchildren and great grandchildren as well as her brother Bill (Margaret), sister Anne, sisters-in-law Evelyn and Ann. She is predeceased by her parents Anton and Katie, husband John, son Ronald, grandson Bryan Scott (first born of Allen and Pat), brother Mike and sister Eileen. Sonia was placed to rest at Brandon Cemetery on May 9th, 2017, followed by a Celebration of Life at Brockie Donovan Chapel. Thank you to the staff at the City of Brandon Handi-Transit for your kindness and great service. The family would also like to greatly acknowledge the staff of the 4th floor Fairview Personal Care Home who will be forever family. Thank you as well to the caring staff at Brockie Donovan for their guidance and support during this difficult time.
