Obituary of Ann Chapman

CHAPMAN: Ann Chapman (nee Martens) of Brandon, Manitoba, beloved mother and grandmother, died peacefully in her 90th year on May 3, 2017. Ann was born on December 19, 1926 at Winkler, Manitoba and grew up with her family on a farm at Fannystelle. She received her early education at Webster School, went to Winnipeg to finish high school, and returned to Webster School to teach on permit, before taking her teacher training. In 1950, she married Wilbert Chapman from the Brandon Hills area and they settled at the historical Maher Stopping House location where they farmed and raised their children, and resided until Wilbert's death in 2008. She spent her later years at Lion's Manor. Ann loved the farm and worked hard on it. Besides farming, she was a substitute teacher for a number of years with the Brandon School Division. She was an active member of the Brandon Hills and Trinity United Churches where she taught Sunday School, served on many committees, and participated in bible studies. Ann is survived by her brother, Peter (Hilda) Martens of Portage-la-Prairie; three children, six grandchildren, and one great-grandchild: Anita Chapman (Fred Bil) of Vancouver and her children Jason Leane of Powell River, Oksana Krause (Erick Jique) and their son, Erick of New Westminster, and Galina Krause of Surrey; Neil (Corianne) Chapman of Brandon Hills, and his children Sarah (Aaron) Peech of Brandon, and Eric (Sydney) Chapman of Winnipeg; and Dan Chapman and his daughter Lauren of Vancouver; and six nieces and nephews on the Martens side and five on the Chapman side. Ann was predeceased by her father, Cornelius Martens, mother Maria Martens (nee Peters); older sisters Lydia Martens, and Mary Bergen and her husband Abe, sister-in-law Eileen Hamel and her husband Roly, and brother-in-law Doug Chapman, his wife Verlaine, and son Kerry.
