Obituary of Robert "Bob" Bergson

BERGSON: Ada, Danny, Lisa (Judi) and Rob are saddened to announce the passing of Robert "Bob" Bergson on May 23, 2017. Dad was born in Carberry on November 1, 1933 to Liz and Dan Bergson, they moved to Gladstone when he was a young boy. He made many friends in Gladstone, none so special a friend as Donald Bewell. Mom and Dad met in Gladstone and married November 15, 1958, the joke being this date was between hunting seasons. Dad was a proud father to Dan, Lisa, and Rob. Dad demonstrated strong moral ethics and convictions that he instilled in his children. He had a heart of gold and was a fantastic role model and teacher. As a young man, Dad played hockey as well as curled. He was a very good athlete being offered a Junior hockey opportunity. In 1950, his curling team won the Provincial Manitoba School Boy Tournament, which saw them go to Prince George to compete in the Nationals. Dad loved to swing a golf club, but we believe he may have loved being in the bush looking for balls just as much. Dad started work with MTS part time while attending high school. He joined the telephones full time in 1953 and worked in various locations including the Mid Canada Early Warning Line, Gladstone, Minnedosa, The Pas, and Brandon and many places in between. Dad was called on often to play Santa at the MTS kids Christmas parties as he seemed to have the right physique for the part. Brenda Martin was his ever faithful Elf. He retired from MTS in Brandon after 36 years of service. Dad was a hunter at heart, moose, deer, goose, and ducks. He was a certified Hunter Safety trainer and taught us all how to shoot and fish. His dogs Sally, Candy, and Tasha were a big part of his hunting team as were his sons, Danny, Rob and best friend Donald. Dad considered his dogs his best behaved children. Dad had an inquisitive mind and loved to travel the world learning about countries and their customs. He and mom made travelling a priority very early on and continued on throughout their 59 year marriage. Dad believed in giving back and did so with grace. Dad joined the Masons when he was but a young man and was a member for over 60 years. He became a Shriner in 1973, when he joined the Brandon Pipes and Drums. He had to learn to play the drums - lucky mom! He got his air license to allow him to drive the Shriners on their bus to and from their marching engagements. Whether it was fundraising for Heart and Stroke, giving blood, driving for meals on wheels or any other cause, Dad lent a hand where he could. In lieu of flowers, the Family would really appreciate it if you would make a donation to the Brandon Regional Health Centre Foundation "Palliative Care", 150 McTavish Avenue East, Brandon, Manitoba, R7A 2B3, there are Angels working there. We thank all of them for the care and compassion they showed our Dad.
