Obituary of Russell "Russ" Roney

RONEY: On Thursday, June 1, 2017, Russell Edgar Roney passed away at the Brandon Regional Health Centre. He had been struggling for some time. Russ was born in Brandon where he spent his whole life. He was teacher for over 30 years teaching math and science at several different schools in the Brandon area. He started his career teaching swimming and gymnastics at the YMCA. He was the C.O. of the Brandon Army cadets for more than 25 years. As a volunteer, he was on the executive with the Legion, and manager/secretary for Green Acres Lodge until it was sold in 2011. In high school and college he played basketball and football. He later on developed the Westman's Officials Association, and refereed many games in both sports. He was inducted into the Manitoba Basketball Hall of Fame in 2013 for his contributions to the sport. He is predeceased by his baby daughter and siblings, Jim, Isabelle, Vera and Sheila. He is survived by his wife, Marjorie Roney, and his children, Tamra (Matt), Dean (Vickie), Shawn (Jodi) & Barrie and his grandchildren, Amanda, Wyatt, Hailey, Jocelyn, Kayla & Lauren. A Funeral Service will be held at Knox United Church, 451 – 18th Street, on Tuesday, June 6, at 1:30pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Russell to the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba, 4B-457-9th Street, Brandon, MB, R7A 4A9 or a charity of choice.
