Verna "Sandy" Maxon

Obituary of Verna "Sandy" Maxon

MAXON: Verna (Sandy). August 28, 1930 – July 4, 2017. Surely there is a loud chorus of laughter in Heaven as you read this, because Sandy is reunited with her husband Vic, her very best friends Rae Delores Edwards and Mary Ellen Kirner, as well as the much-loved family members who went ahead of her. Mom dedicated her life to the service of others, as a nurse's aide at McCallum / International Nursing Home for 21 years and then as a family aide for Child & Family Services for 11 years while she ran a busy household. She held many volunteer roles over the years including pastoral care visits with her dear friend Pastor Ted Jannuska. She was proud to be known as the Teddy Bear Lady as she distributed furry friends at Brandon Regional Health Centre and she loved a good assignment as a personal shopper while she scoured garage sales. She was proud of her Irish heritage but an active member of the Manitoba Chapter of the Icelandic Canadian Club because she was Icelandic by marriage. Her vinarterta will be missed at weddings and christenings in the years ahead. She opened her heart and her home to one and all, but her family and her unshakeable faith were the focal points of her life. We were all privately assured that we were her favourite child and it took a while for us to learn that we all shared this honour! She is survived by her children and their spouses: Marino (Teresa Young-Maxon), Elaine Pilloud (Gary), Linda Parks (Trent), Kathy Schultz-Maxon, Mark (Kathy Baker-Maxon), Marilyn Bullied (Rob). She treasured her role as Amma to her 17 grandchildren and her 20 great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband of 47 years, Victor Helgi Maxon (1997) and her sons Paul Douglas Maxon (2016) and Murray Edwin Maxon (1960). Mom fought a long, brave battle with dementia with the same determination, stubbornness, iron will and that keen sense of humour that served her so well throughout her life. We would like to thank all who supported her through that journey but especially Shirley Durnin of Hobbs Manor, Alla Linov and her team of caregivers at Fairview Personal Care Home, her friends Dorothy Berg and Carol Roberts but most especially her daughter Elaine, with whom she shared a special relationship of mutual support and friendship. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, July 8, 2017 at 10:00 a.m. at Redeemer Lutheran Church, 114 Ashgrove Boulevard, Brandon, MB. In lieu of flowers, if friends desire, donations may be made to the Alzheimer Society of MB 4B, 457 – 9th Street, Brandon MB R7A 4A9 or the charity of their choice.
