Obituary of Florence G. Payne

PAYNE (nee Steward): With deep sorrow, we the family, extended family and best friend announce the passing of Florence G. Payne of 35 Victoria Ave E., Brandon, MB on Wednesday, July 19, 2017 at the Assiniboine Centre Palliative Care. Florence was born to Ed and Ina Steward on July 30, 1938 in Winchester Municipality, MB. Florence spent her early years in Deloraine, MB taking her schooling there. Florence extended her education and became a school teacher for one year. She moved to Toronto, ON for a time and worked for Bell Telephones. Florence then returned to Manitoba and worked for Eaton's in Brandon. After Eaton's she went on to work for Manitoba Telephone System as a traffic operator and then as the clerk in Operator Services, retiring from the position in 1993 after 32 years of service. She was a member of St. Mary's Church, Red Hat Peppers and the Retired Operators Group as well as a Lioness for a time. She was very involved with Telephone Pioneers being the first woman President of Chapter 50. She worked tirelessly for her community delivering Meals on Wheels, flowers for the MS Society and helping out at many church functions. She also volunteered at Fairview Personal Care Home for a number of years. Florence is survived by two step-daughters and their families, nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, great-great nieces and nephews and her long-time friend of many years. Florence was predeceased by her husband Harvey, father, mother, two sisters and their husbands, two nephews and one great nephew. A Memorial Service was held at Brockie Donovan Chapel on Monday, July 31, 2017 with Rev. John Dolloff officiating. Florence's best friend, Faye, carried her urn. Interment followed at Brandon Cemetery where she lays to rest with her parents. Everyone in attendance were considered honourary pallbearers.
