Obituary of James "Jim" Grant

GRANT: James (Jim). On Tuesday, August 15th, 2017, Jim lost a courageous battle with cancer at the Assiniboine Palliative Care Unit in Brandon, Manitoba with his loving wife by his side. Jim was born on Sept 1, 1936 in Walkerton, Ontario. He moved to Russell in 1961 and fell in love with his wife Joanna (Cross). Together they moved back to his home town of Walkerton for two years then relocated to Brandon in 1963. They resided in Brandon for the past 54 years. Jim worked a variety of careers over his lifetime from customer service representative at a local men's clothing store in Brandon to dispatch and driving a cab. In 1978, he secured a maintenance position at Fairview Nursing Home. It is here he remained until his retirement in 2000 with his last position being the Supervisor of the entire Maintenance Department. When not working, Jim dedicated his time raising his daughters and embracing life with Joanna. Together they enjoyed many happy seasons at the cottage at Sandy Lake making memories with friends and family. Jim enjoyed golfing, baseball, lawn bowling, shuffleboard and downhill skiing. Jim revelled in life and had an uncanny knack for meeting new people. There was seldom a time that he didn't encounter someone he knew or make a new friend, all of which attest to his infectious personality and ability to make those around him feel welcome and appreciated. Jim will be deeply missed by his loving wife Joanna, his daughters Jane (Ed) Grant, Jackie (Scott) Barclay, his grandchildren Zackery and Danielle, his siblings Mary Lou Haddad, Lenore (James) Hope and Frank Grant. He also leaves to mourn many in-laws as well as multiple nieces and nephews and a number of very dear friends. Jim was predeceased by his parents James and Mary Grant, his sister and brother-in law Jean and Bob Knox, nephew Brian Knox and brother-in-law Sammy Haddad. A private family graveside service and interment will be held at the cemetery in Russell, Manitoba at a future date. In lieu of flowers, Jim and his family respectfully request that donations be made to the Brandon Regional Health Care Foundation for the Western Manitoba Cancer Centre, 150 McTavish Ave East, Brandon, Manitoba, R7A 2B3.
