Obituary of Edna Corkish

CORKISH: Edna Ellen Corkish passed away peacefully on Wednesday, September 13, 2017 at Hillcrest Place, Brandon, MB, at the age of 100 years. Edna was born in Ninga, MB on March 26, 1917 and was the fifth of seven children to Samuel and Etta Tripp. Her early years were spent on the family farm north of Ninga. Edna attended Ninga School and worked on the family farm until 1938 when she married James Corkish from Boissevain. Jim and Edna lived in a number of railway communities in southwestern MB including Boissevain, Dand, Killarney, Whitewater, and Napinka where Jim worked on the CPR. Following Jim's death in 1965, Edna lived and helped look after her ailing parents in Ninga. She also worked for a number of families in Boissevain and Brandon; cooking, caregiving and cleaning until she retired. During the summer months she spent much of her time at her cottage on Killarney Lake. Edna moved to Brandon following retirement. She continued to spend her summers at the cottage in Killarney until she sold it in 2000. Edna enjoyed activities including quilting, sewing, fretwork, and playing cards. In 2012, she moved to Hillcrest Place. Thank you to the staff at Hillcrest for their care and compassion. Predeceased by her husband James, her brothers Harry, Earl, Lorne, Everett Tripp, sister Lena Marshall, special friends Bill Munn and Tom Turner. Edna is survived by her son, Ken and his children Michael and Melody (Tom) and her daughter Lorna and her children Curtis (Michelle), Melissa (Bruce), Anita (Rob). She is survived by five great grandchildren who will miss her dearly – Sara, Myles, Clayton, Dayna and Erika. Edna is also survived by her sister, Thelma Taylor in Flin Flon, MB; along with many nieces and nephews. A Celebration of Edna's Life was held at the Brockie Donovan Chapel on Thursday, September 21, 2017 at 2:30 p.m. Canon Joy Ruddock officiated. A private family interment was held at Rosewood Memorial Gardens prior to the service. Donations in memory of Edna may be made to the CNIB, Brandon, 354-10th Street, Brandon, MB, R7A 4G1.
