Obituary of Kenneth Robert Elliott

ELLIOTT: It is with the greatest of sorrow that the family of Kenneth Robert Elliott announce his passing on Thursday, September 21, 2017, at the age of 85 years. Ken enjoyed an illustrious 38 year career as a police officer, with 29 years served as a member of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, which he retired from in 1979 as a Staff Sergeant and Section NCO for Brandon Subdivision. Ken was an active member of St. Matthew's Anglican Cathedral and the Rotary Club (which he remained a member of for a period of 33 years). He also served his communities as an active volunteer; assisting with such activities as a youth baseball coach, a volunteer with the 1982 Brandon Centennial celebrations, the 1991 World Youth Baseball Championships and the 1997 Canada Summer Games. He loved spending time with his family and his friends at their cabin on Thomas Lake, which they have owned for 32 years. When Ken's children were younger he enjoyed the annual vacations to his childhood home of Fort William (now Thunder Bay), Ontario, where the family spent much time alternating between two family cabins. He was also an accomplished and avid artist using primarily watercolors and pencil illustrations. Ken was born on June 29, 1932 in Fort William to Robert Thomas and Ivy Bessie Elliott (née Hazell). He was the eldest of two sons, both of whom enjoyed the outdoors immensely. During his youth, he achieved the distinction of becoming a "King's Scout" with Scouts Canada and ultimately a Scoutmaster. He was an avid storyteller who used all the tools of the trade (timing, inflection and the sincerest form of flattery...imitation). He did however embellish his stories at times, which simply made them more fun to listen to again and again. Ken met the love of his life, Gwennyth Hilda Price, while both of them were active members of the "Anglican Young People Association". They were married on June 30, 1956 in Fort William and immediately moved to continue his career with the RCMP in Northern Manitoba. Together Ken and Gwen enjoyed their time with their amazing family of five children: Ted (Susan), Barry (Carmen Drapeau), Barb (Ted) Sokolowski, Jeff (Susan), and Lynda (Michael) Bilyk. They also enjoyed time with their eight grandchildren: Shaun (Holly), Matthew Sokolowski, Jeremy, Brad, Mark Sokolowski, Liam, Alexandra Drapeau and Jordan. And the icing on the cake is their great-granddaughter: Jayne. He was predeceased by his parents, Robert Thomas and Ivy Bessie, and his younger brother Thomas Bruce. He was also predeceased by his very close friends Andy Meacock, Alec Matheson, "Mack" MacArthur, and his greatest partner in crime... Bill Duncan. A Celebration of Ken's Life will be held at St. Matthew's Cathedral, 403- 13th Street, on Tuesday, September 26, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family would ask that donations be made in Ken's name to the RCMP Veterans Association, P.O. Box 5650, Winnipeg, MB, R3C 3K2 or email treasurermbvets@gmail.com.
