Obituary of Ida Chambers

CHAMBERS: In loving memory of Ida Mildred Chambers (née Latimer), born on February 6, 1930 in Boissevain-Morton, MB. Mom passed away peacefully, with her family by her side, at the Assiniboine Centre Palliative Care Unit, Brandon MB on Monday, January 15, 2018 at the age of 87 years. Ida will be lovingly remembered by her husband Donald Chambers; children: Barbara (Nigel) Packwood; Hilda Chambers; Catherine (Dean) Shaw; Carl (Donna) Chambers; 11 grandchildren and seven great grandchildren and sister Margaret Tufts. She was predeceased by her parents Wilford and Emma Latimer, son Brian Chambers and brothers Calvin Latimer and Bill Latimer. Mom was born the third of four children to Wilford and Emma Latimer on the family farm in the Caranton district of Manitoba on February 6, 1930. She took her elementary schooling at Caranton School, in what is now the Rural Municipality of Boissevain–Morton. She later graduated from Boissevain Collegiate in 1948. After graduation Mom taught at Desford School, south of Boissevain for one year and worked as the bookkeeper at Boissevain Consumers Co-op the next year. On October 26, 1950 she married Dad (Donald Chambers) and moved to his family farm in the Croll District before raising a family of four children. Mom worked alongside Dad on the farm operating every kind of farm machinery and helping to tend all the animals. All this hard work from an early age made Mom a very strong woman. Aside from the farm work, Mom prepared the meals, raised a garden and did all the canning, freezing and preserving typical of a farm family. Besides being a farmer and mother, Mom was a long-time member of the United Church of Canada; first in Fairfax, then Boissevain and lastly at Trinity in Brandon. She was also a member of the UCW for several years. Despite the hard work of farming, Mom's life wasn't all work and no play. Mom and Dad enjoyed traveling together; mostly to warmer places in the winter. They spent their winters in Arizona for 30 some years; enjoying dancing, playing shuffleboard, card games, biking and hiking. After many successful years of farming, Mom and Dad retired in 1993 and moved to Brandon in 1996. A Celebration of her Life was held at Trinity United Church, Brandon MB on Monday, January 22, 2018. Thank you to Rev. Doug Neufeld for officiating. Donations in memory of Ida may be made to CancerCare Manitoba Foundation ON1160 – 675 McDermot Avenue, Winnipeg, MB, R3E 0V9 in memory of her son, Brian Chambers.
