Obituary of Charles "Chuck" Meighen

MEIGHEN: Charles Osborne "Chuck" Meighen died suddenly at the Brandon Regional Health Centre on June 21st, 2018 at the age of 74.

Chuck was born on July 7th, 1943 in Brandon to Frank and Muriel Meighen. He received a B.A. in 1964 and an LL.B. in 1967, both from the University of Manitoba. Chuck began practicing with Meighen Haddad in 1967, became a Partner in 1971 and was appointed Queen's Counsel in 1977 by the Province of Manitoba. Chuck was working as senior counsel with the firm up to the date of his death. 2018 marked the 50th year anniversary of Chuck's call to the Manitoba Bar.

Prior to commencing the practice of law, Chuck played hockey for the Brandon Wheat Kings and was Captain of the 1964-65 University of Manitoba Bison's National Championship hockey team, which was inducted into the Manitoba Hockey Hall of Fame.

Chuck married the love of his life, Joanie Foster on November 23rd, 1968 and together they raised three children, Julie, Tim and Susan. As a family they enjoyed travelling on many family trips, but none as special as their ski trips to Big Sky, Montana. Chuck was an avid golfer and swimmer. He loved his time spent at the cottage at Clear Lake. Recently his winters were spent on the golf course and the beach in Naples, Florida.

Chuck felt fortunate to be part of the Brandon Community and believed strongly in giving back. He was a past President of the Brandon Chamber of Commerce, past Chairman of the Brandon District United Way Campaign, past Vice-Chairman of the Manitoba Law Enforcement Review Agency and volunteered extensively on community fundraising projects including capital contributions benefiting the Keystone Centre and the Brandon Regional Health Centre.

Chuck is survived by his loving wife Joanie; children Julie (Matt) Friederichs, Tim (Jenn) Meighen, and Susan Meighen (Shaun Gauthier); grandchildren Cole, Lander, Paige and Noelle Friederichs, Nicolas and Emily Meighen and Allie, Anna and Charlie Gauthier; sister Ann Scovill, brother David (Donna) Meighen, brother-in-law Brian (Marilyn) Foster and their families. He is predeceased by his parents Frank and Muriel Meighen, brother-in-law Ed Scovill and nephew David Scovill.

A celebration of Chuck's life took place on June 28th, 2018 at Central United Church and a private interment will follow at a later date. Donations in memory of Chuck may be made to the Brandon Regional Health Centre Foundation "Capital Equipment Fund", 150 McTavish Avenue East, Brandon, MB, R7A 2B3.
