Obituary of Richard Leslie James Wharf

WHARF: Richard Leslie James Wharf passed away suddenly on Thursday, June 21, 2018 at the age of 63 years. Richard will lovingly be remembered by his son Dan (Becky) and their children Noah and Hayden, daughter Lisa (Patrick) Twomey and their daughters Melora, Dara and Bronwyn and son Ryan (Alanna) and their sons Ethan and Lennon. He is survived by his mother Olive and his siblings, David (Terry), Donald, Janice, Pam and was predeceased by his father William James Wharf, brother Frederick and sister Dawna-Jo. Richard was born on February 26, 1955 in Winnipeg, Manitoba. He grew up in Winnipeg and attended school in the St. James area. He attended Red River College and received his Medical Radiological Technology Diploma in 1976. In 1980, Richard and the family moved to Brandon. Richard worked at Brandon General Hospital which became the Brandon Regional Health Centre for 22 years in roles progressing from a general duty technologist to System Administrator of Diagnostic Imaging. Richard was involved with the Manitoba Association of Medical Radiation Technologists (MAMRT) and the Canadian Association of Medical Radiation Technologists (CAMRT), including roles on the board of directors and being President of the CAMRT. For the past 16 years he worked at the Brandon Clinic as a General Duty Technologist. Richard had many passions which centered around teaching. He enjoyed the aspects of teaching and his patience and ability to explain why you were doing something or should be doing something helped him to excel in these teaching roles. Some of these passions include his lifelong pursuit and instruction of Martial Arts, specifically Isshin-Ryu Karate. Richard was one of the founding members of Westman Isshin-Ryu Karate and achieved his 6th degree black belt (Roku Dan) as well as the title of Shihan (master instructor). His love for teaching also led him to roles instructing at Assiniboine Community College, Reiki, Coaching minor sports and many others. Richard enjoyed many other passions including genealogy, meditation, crystals and gem stones, energy healing, toastmasters, music (specifically the Beatles), technology, travel and reading. These passions resulted in Richard crossing paths with a wide variety of people. One of the things that Richard loved most was his family. He always found time to attend grandkids activities including musicals, gymnastics competitions, baseball, hockey and soccer games as well as being the resident dog sitter for the grand dogs Lexi, Bailey and Ruby. A Celebration of Richard's life was held on June 29, 2018 at Brockie Donovan in Brandon, Manitoba.
