Obituary of Linda Chan

CHAN: Linda Adamae Stella Chan passed away at her residence, Fairview Personal Care Home, on Thursday, September 6, 2018 at the age of 65 years. Linda was born on August 9, 1953 and anyone who knew her for most of her life would say she was unpredictable, forthright and had an irascible sense of humour as well as temperament. But she didn't start out that way. Linda was a middle child, twins with Stanley Chan, her alter ego. She was born in Virden, Manitoba. Linda was named after her father's friends and sponsors into North America. She was a shy, soft-spoken young girl, a good and compliant student who enjoyed home economics and did well in commercial law classes, figuring she'd be a secretary in a law firm or otherwise build a secretarial career starting in the early 1970's after graduation from high school. But her small town naiveté and a year in the big bad city did her in, and she came back a changed person with a changed personality, along with compromised physical health. As much as she sought her independence, it was not to be. She received great support from the Brandon Community including her many caregivers at the Brandon Mental Health Centre, ARM Industries, and Ventures. Her resident caregiver, Madeleine Addison, deserves a special shout out as she, despite bets to the contrary, had the patience and tenacity to take care of Linda for longer than expected, almost 20 years. In her later years, Linda was grateful for the kind care she received at Fairview Personal Care Home. Living there she enjoyed her final years independently among her many friends who all have their own "Linda story". She is predeceased by her father, George Chan and mother Clara Chan Roth. She will be missed by her twin brother Stan Chan (Susin Cadman), sisters Joyce Kent Raymond and Kate Azure, nephews Brian (Maria) Kent and Daniel 'Sparky' (Sheena) Kent and their families, and niece Lesley (Ruben) Simon and her family. A private family service will be held. Donations in Linda's memory may be made to Fairview Personal Care Home, 1351-13th Street, Brandon, MB, R7A 4S6.
