Obituary of Shirley Josephine Paine

PAINE: It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Mrs. Shirley Josephine "Jo" Paine (née Tomlinson) on Tuesday, February 12, 2019. Jo was born on December 13, 1930 and was raised and educated in Saskatchewan. She earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of Saskatchewan in 1953 and a Master of Science in Nursing (Education) from the University of Western Ontario in 1973. Much of her professional work experience was in nursing education: she held positions at the School of Nursing at Saskatoon City Hospital, the Children's Hospital of Winnipeg, and the Brandon General Hospital School of Nursing. Jo retired in 1992, having been the Director of the Brandon General Hospital School of Nursing since 1977. Beginning in 1974, and continuing to 1993, she was actively involved in a wide variety of efforts to establish a degree program in nursing at Brandon University. In 1987, she was seconded from Brandon General Hospital and Appointed Acting Chairperson, Department of Nursing, Faculty of Science, at Brandon University. This was the beginning of the post-diploma baccalaureate program in nursing at Brandon University. The Manitoba Association of Registered Nurses (now the College of Registered Nurses) was the main focus of her professional activities. She was a member of many committees and of the Board of Directors and served as President from 1988 to 1990. After retirement, a major interest had been designing and creating costumes for community and high school theatre, and for the Brandon University School of Music "Opera Excerpts." She was also actively involved in costuming and organization for the "Madrigale Feaste" at the BU School of Music from 1977 to 1987. As a long-time member of St. Mary's Anglican Church in Brandon, she had been a vestry member and a member of the Altar Guild. From 1986 to 1990, she served as a member of the Board of Directors of Samaritan House Ministries in Brandon. Jo married musician Leslie Paine in 1953, and together they raised three children: Matthew, Nancy, and Patricia. The family settled in Brandon in 1964. Jo is predeceased by her loving husband Leslie "Cham" Paine and her daughter Nancy Miller; she is survived by son Matthew Paine and wife Cindy Noppen, daughter Patricia Boggs, grandchildren Linden Paine and wife Kortney Tarney-Paine, Emaline Collins, Christine Boss, Alexander Paine, Stephan and Thomas Miller, and Tyler, Joshua and Zachary Boggs, as well as several nieces and nephews and their families. Cremation has taken place. A Memorial Service will be held at St. Mary's Anglican Church, 401-1st Street, Brandon, on Saturday, July 13, 2019 at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. Christopher Evetts officiating. Donations in memory of Jo may be made to a charity of choice. The Road goes ever on and on, Down from the door where it began. Now far ahead the Road has gone, And I must follow, if I can, Pursuing it with eager feet, Until it joins some larger way Where many paths and errands meet. And whither then? I cannot say. The Road goes ever on and on Out from the door where it began. Now far ahead the Road has gone, Let others follow it who can! Let them a journey new begin, But I at last with weary feet Will turn towards the lighted inn, My evening-rest and sleep to meet. J.R.R. Tolkien
