Obituary of Harry Young

YOUNG: It's with sadness that we announce the passing of Harry Albert Young on Tuesday, January 14, 2020 at age of 93 years. Harry was born on October 1, 1926 in Virden, Manitoba to Jane and Charles Young; the second youngest of six boys. Harry is survived by his wife Jean Dorland Young (née Shinske); children: Joseph Young (Bonnie); Mary Jane Lawrence (Doug) and Beverly Asham (Danny); his brother Ken (Jean) as well as numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Harry's early life included sea cadets, dancing and by Grade 8, he quit Alexandra School as he was "too smart for the teachers" and was ready to work and settle down. His many jobs included delivering bread and dry-cleaning, running his own delivery service, driving school bus, working for CP Rail, being a security guard, and for many years, he worked as a custodian at New Era and JR Reid schools. After four years of dating in their younger years, he married Jean, his beloved wife and best friend of 72 years. Harry was a jack of all trades and was known for puttering around in his home workshop, tinkering with anything that was broken and creating numerous wood-working gifts for people. Failing health saw him move into Fairview Personal Care Home in October 2016, where he quickly won the hearts of staff and was known as the "Fairview greeter" found parked at the front door to welcome all those who would come to visit loved ones. He was a kind and gentle family man, always with a twinkle in his eye and deep love for his family. Quick to smile and always eager to chit chat, Harry found his way into hearts with ease. His loved ones find some solace in knowing that he passed away peacefully in his sleep, well aware that he was loved incredibly by his family. The family wishes to thank the wonderful staff at Fairview Personal Care Home, who helped Harry adjust to his new living conditions and really feel at home. At his request, no service will be held. Donations in his memory may be made to The Salvation Army, 9 Princess Ave E., Brandon, Manitoba, R7A 1R8 or please visit www.salvationarmy.ca.
