Ken Zarn

Obituary of Ken Zarn

ZARN: Kenneth Morley Zarn passed away Thursday, April 2, 2020. Dad was born March 20, 1937. He was the oldest of three boys born to Elmer and Olga (nee Hertlein). Brother Donald was born February 5, 1941, and Brian was born July 5, 1947. Elmer and Olga farmed in the Ewart district. On November 27, 1952 Elmer died suddenly of a heart attack, which left Olga and the boys to hire help from May to October of 1953. Dad and Uncle Donald (Duck), continued farming until 1957. In the winter of 1957 Dad worked at High River, AB for a short time, then worked for Western Motors in Brandon. Dad married mom, Helen Zelmer on October 18, 1958 and continued to live in Brandon until April, 1959 when they moved back to farm with Uncle Duck. Grandma Olga and Uncle Brian then moved to Reston, MB. Dad enjoyed playing ball with the Ewart gang and also enjoyed curling. Playing cards was also a big part of our family life. Mom and Dad had two girls, Diane Mae, born on May 27, 1959 and me, Arlene Gail, born September 28, 1960. Dad always liked to tease and say that if I was the first born I would have been and only child! "Anyways", Dad and Mom lived, farmed and played in the Ewart district. We moved down the road from Uncle Duck in April 1998. Uncle Duck passed away July 15, 2005 and Mom and Dad moved to Brandon the summer of 2010. They were blessed with four grandchildren, Angela (Jason), Jennifer (Charles), Scott (Rachelle) and Kyle (Becky). The four have a lot of fond memories spent all together on the farm during their school holidays. The grandparents loved it just as much. Before they knew it, the great grandchildren came along. More to love and tease. Madison, Alyssa, Hailey, Jenalle, Brooke, Curtis and Kaylee all fell victim to it. Dad was much more than a farmer and a teaser. He was a camper, a hunter, a prankster, a jokester and a BS'er (Liar's Dice). He was a great friend and someone who loved to laugh. He made the most out of life. We will miss you Zorro. Our family would like to thank those who sent food, flowers and fruit baskets. Thanks for the cards, phone calls, emails and texts we received. The funny stories mixed with a lot of love. We would also like to thank all the staff that Dad encountered while at the Brandon Regional Health Centre and Palliative Care unit. To all the housekeeping staff that put up with his teasing, we thank you. A big thanks to Meagan and her team at physio for helping dad. Your efforts didn't go unnoticed. To Jeremy and Cindy at Brockie Donovan, we can't thank you enough for all that you have done for us at this difficult time.
