Arley-Bly Wiley

Obituary of Arley-Bly Wiley

WILEY: Arley-Bly passed away January 29, 2010 with family present and in their hearts. She was the much loved mother of Arlene Wiley of Winnipeg, Karen (Emmett) Elves of Brandon, and Lorne (Gay) Wiley of Winnipeg. The cherished Grandmother of Michael (Michelle Klimczak) of Winnipeg, Robert (Andrea) and Andrew (Duncan Frater) of Victoria and Great-Grandmother to Archer Michael Camden Klimczak-Elves. Her parents, Roy and Edith Mains (McDiarmid), welcomed her birth at their farm home in the Workman district south of Carievale, Saskatchewan, November 12, 1924. After high school graduation in Carnduff, Saskatchewan, she taught grade one to twelve for a year on permit near Saltcoats, Saskatchewan. But, her vocation was to become a nurse and she graduated from Brandon General Hospital in 1947. She nursed until ill health forced an early retirement in 1981. The only Canadian in the Premature Nursing Certificate program at the University of Colorado, she finished at the top of her class. She loved being Head Nurse in the Nursery, and especially loved caring for premature infants. She was Unit Coordinator of Labour and Delivery, Post-partum, Nursery and Gynaecology and finished her nursing career on Pediatrics at Brandon General Hospital. She married Gordon Wiley in January 1948; they legally separated in 1960 and were divorced in 1973. A single mother, long before society understood choices a mother could make on her children's behalf, Arley was fortunate to have the help, love, and support of her mother in raising her children. Arley was born the year the United Church of Canada was formed and her faith in God sustained her throughout her life. She was an active member of Central United Church until moving to HCPCH. Surviving her are family named above, her sister-in-law Alice in Hay River, Northwest Territories, nieces Anne Mains (Steve Mihok), Catharine Mains, nephew Sandy Mains; niece Pamela (Barry) Brown and family and Arliss (Eileen) Dellow and family and her dear friends, Corie Orser and Rose Wilson. She was predeceased by her parents Roy (1952) and Edith (1974) and all her siblings: Lillian 1999, Iola 1994, Calvin 2008, Beulah 1932, and Eunice and Ruby in infancy. Special thanks to the wonderful caregivers over the past few years including home care, staff at BRHC, staff at Hillcrest Place and Brandon Emergency Services. Thanks to the wonderful doctors of the Brandon Clinic and BRHC and to the staff at Central United Church. The service to celebrate her life was held January 31, 2010 at 2:30 in Central United Church, officiated by Rev. Laird Russell-Yearwood and Rev. Shannon McCarthy. A luncheon was served by the UCW following the service. Interment in the family plot at Workman Cemetery will take place at a later date. It was Arley's written expressed desire that each person in attendance at the celebration of her life served as her honourary pallbearer. Donations may be made to Central United Church Building Fund, 327-8th Street, Brandon, MB, R7A 3X5. Faith, hope and love abide and the greatest of these is love. 1st Corinthians 13 v. 13
