Obituary of Duncan Oliver "Olie" McLean

McLEAN:Duncan Oliver (Olie) passed away peacefully at his home,Valleyview Care Centre, on his 91st birthday. He was born July 19, 1919 to Alma and Duncan McLean and attended school at Little Souris, south of Brandon, and Mt. Vernon, in the Rapid City District. When he finished school, he worked on the farm with his Dad and when World War II began he enlisted in the army. He served until the end of the war, returning home safely in 1946. He worked with Manitoba Hydro and later purchased his farm, 1.5 miles south of Rapid City. He married Margaret Draper in 1956 and together they farmed until they retired to Minnedosa. Olie was active in the United Church in Rapid City and Minnedosa and an active member of the IOOF and Rebekahs. Olie loved music and thoroughly enjoyed playing for dances, entertaining and being a part of The McLean Orchestra. This continued for many years. Olie and Margaret moved to Brandon and spent many years at Hobbs Manor. He was a member of Central United Church.Margaret passed away in 2001 and Olie has been a resident of Valleyview Care Centre for six years. He was predeceased by his mother and father, Alma and Duncan McLean, brother Harold, his wife, Margaret, and is surivived by his brothers George(Jean) McLean of Minnedosa, Albert(May) McLean of Brandon, a sister Bernice Bertram(Eric Stanzeleit) of Brandon, and many nieces and nephews. Olie was a kind and gentle man and was loved by the staff at Valleyview, who treated him with respect and dignity. He will be missed by all. A time of visitation will be held at Brockie Donovan Chapel, 332-8th Street, on Thursday, July 22, 2010 at 7:00 p.m. The funeral service will be held at Brockie Donovan Chapel, on Friday, July 23, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. with Mona Franklin officiating. The graveside service will follow at Rapid City Cemetery. Donations in memory of Olie may be made to Central United Church, 327-8th Street, Brandon, MB, R7A 3X5.
