Obituary of Dr. Morrell Metro Soroka

SOROKA: Dr. Morrell Soroka (1930 – 2010). Dr. Soroka passed away at the Brandon Regional Health Centre on Saturday, August 14, 2010 at the age of 80 years. He was born in Lampman, Saskatchewan where he received his elementary and secondary education before entering medical school at the University of Manitoba. He graduated in 1956 and set up in general practice in Estevan, Saskatchewan. In 1959, he married Lois Entwistle of Estevan and their sons Peter and Gregg and daughter Laurie were all born in Estevan. After 12 years of practice, Dr. Soroka returned to the University of Manitoba to achieve his specialist degree in general surgery. In 1973, he and his family moved to Brandon, Manitoba and he joined the Brandon Clinic where he remained until his retirement in 1991. Morrell and Lois spent much of their retirement travelling, including a ten-month stay in Europe and numerous winters in Arizona. The grandchildren were very much a focus in Morrell's life until he died. They were the centre of his attention and he looked forward to time spent with them. Dr. Soroka was predeceased by his father Peter (1960) and his mother Polly (1994). He is survived by his wife Lois and his three children: Peter (Sarah) Soroka, Nicholas, Alyssia, Tom and Serena of London, England; Gregg (Jessie) Soroka, Tamire, Thelma and Gabriel of Kelowna, B.C.; Laurie (Peter) Tauriainen, Mikko and Matti of Wichita Falls, Texas. Brother Alex (Leona) Soroka, Vancouver, B.C.; sister Olga Lafrentz, Estevan, SK; sister-in-law Cheryl Entwistle (Kerry), Vancouver, B.C. Prayers will be held at the Brockie Donovan Chapel, 332-8th Street, on Thursday, August 19, 2010 at 7:00 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Augustine's Roman Catholic Church, 327 – 4th Street, on Friday, August 20, 2010 at 10:30 a.m. with Fr. Dominic Yuen as Celebrant. Burial will follow at Cannington Manor Historical Park, SK at 3:00 p.m. (2:00 p.m. Saskatchewan time). In memory of Dr. Soroka, donations may be made to the Brandon Regional Health Centre Foundation, "Western Manitoba Cancer Care Project" 150 McTavish Ave. East, Brandon, MB, R7A 2B3.
