Obituary of Wilfred (Wilf) Turmaine

TURMAINE: Wilfred (Wilf) J. Turmaine, 78, of Brandon, Manitoba, lost his long struggle with various cardiovascular challenges on Monday, October 18, 2010 in the Assiniboine Centre at Brandon's Regional Health Care Facility. Wilf had been battling heart and stroke issues for the past two decades. Wilf was born March 30, 1932, in Fort William, Ontario, the son of the late Mary and Harvey Turmaine. He is survived by his older brother, Raymond. Wilf was married twice. In 1952, he married Rosemary, the mother of their four children: Deb, Mike, John and Joe. Rosemary died in 1981 at the age of 49. In 1985, Wilf married Moira who was taken by cancer less than a year later. Wilf is survived by his four children, several grandchildren and one great grandchild. His sister-in-law Rosemary and his daughters-in-law Brenda and Sharon were very important in his life. Many other family members who were more prominent in his earlier family days have since moved on but have never been forgotten. A series of private family remembrances have taken place across Canada from Kelowna, B.C. to Thunder Bay, Ontario. A final Mass for Wilf will be held at Dawson Court Home for the Aged in Thunder Bay on Wednesday, December 8, 2010. Wilf enjoyed the retirement that 30+ years of service to Canada Post and 40 years of family and friendship in Brandon afforded him. He will be missed by many. His requests for those able to remember him financially would be to take a member of their family out for a special meal, or a tribute to the Brandon Humane Society, 2200-17th Street East, Brandon, MB, R7A 7M6 (Wilf loved his cats, most recently Harriett) or to the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Manitoba, Unit 3 –824-18th Street, Brandon, MB, R7A 5B7. During his four month stay at the Brandon Regional Health Centre, Wilf saw it all, from Emergency, to the General Hospital, ICU, and the Assiniboine Centre. Wilf's final days were in the Palliative Care section of the AC where he received excellent "care and comfort." While still conscious he was able to interact enjoyably with nurses, health care aides and especially staff from "We Care." The "We Care" staff stayed with him 24 hours a day after his release from intensive care and made his last days less frightening. Thank you to all who helped and cared. Wilf will be interred with Rosemary in Serenity Gardens at Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens at 4000 Portage Avenue, Winnipeg.
