Obituary of Patrick Joseph O'Sullivan

Sir Patrick Joseph O'Sullivan, KCSG, 1920 – 2011. On Saturday, July 9, 2011 Patrick was called to join his dear wife, Edith in new life with his Creator. Pat was born on March 28, 1920 to Patrick and Marie Louise (Poirier) O'Sullivan and grew up on Percy Street. His Baptism was the beginning of a lifelong commitment to St. Augustine's Church. He attended St. Augustine's School and BCI. He was a Reservist and worked at the Armories, but due to health issues he was unable to enlist. Patrick's entire career was at the CNR, where he was a loyal and respected employee. He married Edith Dorning in 1952 and they lived happily on Russell Street for over half a century. In recognition of his commitment to St. Augustine's he was Knighted in 1970, by Pope Paul VI, as a Knight Commander in the Order of St. Gregory. Pat was active in the St. Vincent de Paul, Knights of Columbus and Serra Club. For all of his life, he was associated with the Sisters of Our Lady of the Missions whom he admired for their dedication to the people of Brandon. He counted among his closest friends the many Priests who served at St. Augustine's over the years. In 2009, Pat moved to Rideau Park where he was truly happy thanks to his wonderful caregivers. Pat was predeceased by Edith; siblings Margaret, Mary (Peter) Sharkey, John, Gerard (Bernice), Anne (Michael) Hanniman and the Honorable Joseph O'Sullivan. He is survived by his sisters; Rita O'Sullivan of Brandon and Teresa Egan of Winnipeg; sister-in-law Adele O'Sullivan, fifteen nieces and nephews and their families. Also surviving from Edith's family are Margret (Ray) Brayshaw, Bernice Fagan and their families. Everyone turned to Pat for his wisdom, knowledge, understanding, counsel, fortitude, piety and awe of the Lord. The family is grateful to all of Pat's friends who enriched his life and to the staff of Rideau Park. Mass of Christian Burial was held at St. Augustine's with Fr. Dominic Yuen as Celebrant. He was joined on the altar by Msgr Jamieson, Vicar General, Msgrs Jaworski & McCloskey, Frs Ahaneku, Burwell,SJ, Fernandes, Kwiatkowski, Seaman, and Deacon MacKenzie. Family and friends gathered from near and far, especially James O'Sullivan representing Pat's Irish cousins, John Hong from New York, and many of the Sisters of Our Lady of the Missions. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations would be very much appreciated to the St. Vincent de Paul Society, c/o St. Augustine's Church, which aids the poor of Brandon, or St. Augustine's Church, 327-4th Street. Brandon, MB R7A 3H1.
