I have been thinking about you folks from time to time, my mother having died last year Nov 7, at 87. You might remember Dr. and Steffie Scherz from Oak Lake. I worked for you both in 1978 at Gooden's Men's Shop, during the hostage taking of my parents. I am so glad that you have had such a full llife together. Please accept my condolences for George. I learned a great deal about business from Mr. Gooden. He was always very patient and fair, although I'm sure we tested him several times. I always thought The Ski Shoppe was THE place to work in Brandon and have a lot of great memories and made a lot of friends there. George and Mary were a joy to work for - they always made us feel like we were a part of their family.

To the Gooden Clan: It was with much sadness to have learned of George's passing. I am so glad to have visited with George, Mary, and the Gooden families at granddaughter Kim's wedding in October 2010, and also at Kent and Karen's condo in Banff during Christmas 2009! Those are times I will always remember with fondness. I think I first got to know George and Mary when Jill, Bill, and I were on the speed swimming team at the old YMCA, back in the early 1960s. After I moved away from Brandon in the 1970s, I always made it a point to stop in at Gooden's Men's Wear to say 'hello' to George, whenever I came back to a visit. Of course, I would then go chat with Mary in her wonderful shop upstairs! I still have a pair of downhill boots that I bought in their Ski Shop! One time, I even won a free ski vacation in Montana when Gooden's had their big fall ski show in the Centennial Auditorium! Some things you just never forget. George's genuine warmth and friendliness are what I will remember most of all. May your many wonderful memories bring you comfort at this time. I hope it helps somewhat to know that so many others are keeping you close in thought. Kindest personal regards, Donna (Morley, Alberta)

Mary,Kent, Jill, Bill and families. Please accept our heartfelt condolences on George's passing. As a former loyal "ski shop" employee of George's, I can quite honestly say that I have never met or worked for a more fair-minded, understanding, and astute business person as George. He allowed us our foibles, but also demanded respect, a passion for the business, and a deep commitment to our customers. If I hadn't actually completed University and acquired some significant responsibilities.....I probably would have worked for George for many more years, because i enjoyed it so much. I'm sure these sentiments are echoed by all the other employees, friends, and acquaintances who had the luxury of being a part of the life of such a wonderful man. Hopefully your great memories of him will sustain you now and in the years to come. - the McQueen family

Mary,Kent,Jill and Bill and families: We were so sorry to hear about Georges passing. He was a wonderful man and we always enjoyed our visits with him and Mary.I had the privilege of working for George at Goodens and we had a lot of good times there. Mr. Gooden (I could never call him George.) was a most thoughtful, generous, and warm-hearted person. I loved visiting him at the store; his taste was impeccable. And I loved seeing him working away just down the desk from me in the BU library. He, in fact, urged me to pursue a PhD in psychology, which I did; 2 years ago at my retirement celebration, after 30 years at the University of Victoria, I mentioned those folks who had influenced my career. Mr. Gooden was one of them. My thoughts are with you all, especially Jill, who was a wonderful student of mine at Neelin High.

Dear Mrs. Gooden, Kent, Jill & Bill
I was very sorry to hear of the death of Mr. Gooden. While not having been in Brandon for a few years, I did (and do) keep up with some of the happenings and friends from my youth. I enjoyed visiting with Mr. & Mrs. Gooden on a couple of occasions in the store when at home. Hearing of Mr. Gooden's passing has also brought forth many happy memories of our early years on 12th St. May your memories bring you peace and comfort at this difficult time.

This community has lost a great man, a true gentleman, who unstintingly shared himself - his "know-how" and wisdom-wherever and whenever it was needed. George was truly generous in every sense of the word.
My deepest sympathies are extended to Mary and the family.
With fondness and respect,
Marg MacDonald

While working for Mr Gooden in the ski shop, he encouraged me to take "just one course" in business to see what it was all about. That one course lead me to attaining my MBA and devoting my career to business. I greatly enjoyed working with him as he was such a caring person. I would like to be there in person on September 15th but unfortunatley will be out of town. Deepest sympathies to Mary and the family.

Dear Mary and family,
We were so sorry to hear of George's passing. We love you, our neighbours at the lake - you are cherished and loved and George will indeed be missed.
We've so many funny little stories but the most memorable was the day we became acquainted whilst carrying the rocks for the flower bed up those terrible stairs at the lake - Shirley and George laughing all the way! Our Love, The Jones family.
