Obituary of Dorothy Winnifred Smart

Dorothy Winnifred Smart was born April 10th, 1928 in Arden, Manitoba. She was the fifth child of nine born to William and Florence Smart. In 1947, she married Dave Smart, which then sealed the deal. It made her "Smart" for life. The joys of being a CPR wife meant packing and unpacking ten times in four years, before settling in Treherne. In 1955, they moved to Chater where they raised their family and lived for many years. Mom was the ultimate housewife. No running water, or few modern conveniences, but she never complained and always took the best care of her family. It was there that she learned to drive a car. In the pastures of Reed's farm, with the kids in the back seat, mom taught herself to drive a standard, and the kids were so disappointed when Mrs. Angus told her not to start driving in third gear, which ruined all the fun. In 1971, they moved to Brandon. Mom worked as a nursing assistant at BMHC for 17 years. She will always be remembered for the kindness she showed to the residents in her care. Many times she would arrive at the family cabin with a van full of residents to treat them to a fun day out. She was a lover of travel, and was able to see many parts of the world; Africa, Great Britain, Alaska, Hawaii, and many Norm Olfrey bus trips with the girls to the US. She loved to sing in the choir, and was always the first one on the dance floor when the music started. Her clogging group won first prize at the Calgary Stampede in the talent show. We will always remember her Sunday dinners, when she could never have enough company around the dining room table. Mom and Dad moved into Lions Manor in 1999, which was her first brand-new home! Dorothy is survived by: her son, Danny (Andrea), daughters Bev (Gary) and Valerie (Dave), daughter-in-law Lorna (Murray); her grandchildren Vic (Shawna), Tanya (Sean), Heidi, Drew, Jonathan, Daniel (Shelly), Jessica, Carlie, Lindsay, Taylor, Tatianna, and David; great grandchildren Brooklyn, Taylor, Rowan, Annika, and Nicholas; her sisters Betty, Vera, and Audrey, brothers Donnie and Barry. She was predeceased by her husband Dave in 2001, son David in 1971, and son-in-law Greg in 2006; sisters Jean, Muriel, and brother Alan. We wish to thank Hillcrest for their kindness and care during her time there. When I come to the end of the road And the sun has set for me I want no rites in a gloom filled room Why cry for a soul set free Miss me a little - but not too long And not with your head bowed low Remember the love that we once shared Miss me - but let me go For this is a journey that we must all take And each must go alone It's all a part of the Master's plan A step on the road to home When you are lonely, and sick of heart Go to the friends we know And bury your sorrows in doing good deeds Miss me - but let me go
