Obituary of Amy Jane Walker
WALKER: Amy Jane (Onens) passed away peacefully at Valleyview Care Centre on Tuesday, May 1, 2012 with her family by her side.
She was born in London, England on August 25, 1919. She was quite proud of being a "true Cockney", having been born "within the sound of Bowbells." She grew up in London and served as a nursing assistant in the Royal Air Force during the Second World War. She met her husband, Tony Walker of Brandon, Manitoba when he was stationed at Brighton Air Force Base. They married in London on December 26, 1942. She came to Canada as a "war bride" in 1946. She and Tony raised their family of four in Brandon. Tony predeceased her on March 8, 1992.
Amy was known for her knitting skills and her family was the fortunate recipients of many beautifully made items over the years. These will be cherished for years and generations to come. She was also an excellent cook and baker and loved to make everyone's favorite "dainties" at Christmas. Everyone always left after the holidays with a box of baking that she had done "just for them"
After Amy and Tony retired, they enjoyed travelling and visiting family. A highlight was a trip to England and Wales, to visit her relatives back home, with her daughter Gloria in 1992.
She always had a warm welcome for family, especially her grandchildren. Even the family pets were welcomed, as she had a great love for animals, especially dogs.
Amy is survived by her children Gloria (Clifford) Free of Winnipeg, Diane and Tom of Brandon and Mike (Lynne) of Calgary. Also left to cherish her memory are three grandchildren Karen (Stan) Free-Gajek of Winnipeg, Chris (Renea) Free of Ottawa and Andrew Walker of Calgary. Amy was blessed with three great grandchildren Simon and Nigel Free and Keegan Gajek. In accordance with Amy's wishes, cremation has taken place. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Amy may be made to a charity of choice.
